Lawncrest ready for Fourth celebration

The 96th Lawncrest Fourth of July celebration will take place Monday at the Lawncrest Recreation Center, at Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street.

The theme is Community Spirit.

The rain date is Saturday, July 9.

A parade will start at 9 a.m., featuring string bands, armed service organizations, antique cars, community groups and churches, floats and local sports team mascots. The parade grand marshals will be John J. Riehl, owner of Rings Pharmacy, and Evelyn Flaherty, president of the Friends of Lawncrest Library.

An American flag-raising ceremony will follow the parade.

There will be games, prizes and T-shirt sales all day. T-shirts are also for sale at the Wawa store at Rising Sun and Longshore avenues. Raffle drawings will be held at 4:30 p.m.

Other activities include a flea market (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.), food court (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), classic car show (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), children’s rides (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), live musical entertainment (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and bingo (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

There will be a fireworks display at dusk.

In other news from the June 21 Lawncrest Community Association meeting:

The Philadelphia Protestant Home, at 6500 Tabor Road, will host two concerts this summer, and the public is invited.

The Daisy Jug Band will perform on Thursday, July 21. The Midiri Brothers orchestra will entertain on Thursday, Aug. 25.

Both shows start at 7 p.m. and will take place in the PPH’s air-conditioned social hall.

The crowd held a moment of silence for Robert Barrilli Jr., who died June 2 from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident. He was 29. His father is an aide to City Councilman Brian O’Neill (R-10th dist.).
