Feedback sought for Frankford mural project

Northeast residents can chip in their ideas about a series of murals planned for Frankford’s business corridor during two community meetings that will be held Wednesday, Oct. 5, and Thursday, Oct. 13, at Denby’s Sweet Sensations, 4428 Frankford Ave. Both sessions will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Cesar Viveros, of the city’s Mural Arts Program, will paint the Imagining Frankford murals this spring, and he wants to listen to residents’ stories about their neighborhood.

Viveros wants to hear about memories, hopes and dreams, said project manager Netanel Portier. He’ll use those images to create “a cohesive series of public artworks,” she said. After the public sessions, Viveros will conduct private meetings with individuals.

The murals will be of varied sizes and will be situated on Frankford Avenue or just off the avenue. Some of the murals might be visible from the El, she said.

The Mural Arts Program is presently picking locations and trying to get authorizations from property owners.

Because work is conceived as a series of murals, Portier expects that the designs will be complex. Viveros then will submit those designs to Mural Arts. They will be reviewed during the winter.

Much work will be done in a studio, she said, and neighborhood residents will be invited to participate. Mural installations are projected to begin in the spring or summer, depending on weather.
