Water main break creates street geyser

Flooding from a water main break damaged two homes and two businesses, while interrupting water service late Sunday night and early Monday in the Northeast.

An 8-inch underground pipe burst at Willits and Ashton roads at about 10 p.m. Sunday, said John DiGiulio, a Philadelphia Water Department spokesman. Witnesses reported that water shot dozens of feet into the air for a time, then filled the street before water department workers shut off the flow.

“Some properties received water in the cellar,” said DiGiulio. “We pumped that out [on Sunday] night.”

Full water service resumed in the neighborhood before noon on Monday. Affected streets had been closed temporarily but were reopened to vehicle traffic by Monday morning.

The cause remains under investigation DiGiulio said. The main was installed in 1955.
