At Fels, a gun is found in a backpack

A Fels High School student is sitting in a city jail cell after he allegedly tried to bring a gun into school last Wednesday.

Shaheed Whack, of the 200 block of W. Clarkson Ave. in Olney, remains behind bars at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 bail. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 2.

Last Wednesday at about 7:30 a.m., he allegedly tried to enter the school, at 5700 Langdon St., but school police discovered a gun in his backpack as he passed through a metal detector just inside the front door. Whack ran from the building, but Philadelphia police caught him nearby at Langdon and Sanger streets.

Police allegedly recovered the loaded .38-caliber revolver from Whack’s book bag and charged him with carrying firearms without a license, carrying firearms in public and possessing a weapon on school property.

The Philadelphia Daily News reported that Whack was wounded in the leg during a shooting last July 4 at the Welcome America celebration on Ben Franklin Parkway. The paper also reported, citing unspecified sources, that Whack had fought and been threatened by another teen recently. ••
