Thieves swipe truck, car wheels

Police in the Far Northeast are warning area businesses and motorists about a recent rash of vehicle wheel thefts.

Within the 8th district, 13 rental truck wheels were stolen in two incidents, while wheels were taken off of two parked cars in apparently unrelated thefts.

Crooks took three wheels from Penske rental trucks that were parked at 8330 State Road on June 6, said Sgt. Mike Colello. The crime happened between midnight and 7:15 a.m. Four days later, police received a report that 10 wheels had been stolen from an unspecified number of Ryder rental trucks at 9751 Blue Grass Road. Those thefts occurred sometime between June 8 and 10.

Meanwhile on June 8, someone stripped a wheel from an SUV on the 4600 block of Millet St. On June 9, a car suffered the same fate on the 8800 block of Lister Road.

Private vehicle owners can help protect themselves by using rims with locking devices on the lug nuts, Colello said. ••
