Gun buyback event nets 82 firearms

There are 82 fewer guns on the streets as a result of a gun buyback event conducted by the 15th Police District and the 15th Police District Advisory Council last Saturday at the Engine 38 firehouse in Tacony.

Members of the public were invited to bring unloaded firearms to the event and to surrender them to police “no questions asked.” Organizers distributed $50 grocery store gift cards to each person who turned in a gun. The event lasted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The 15th district and PDAC hope that the buyback will reduce gun violence in communities including Frankford, Bridesburg, Wissinoming, Tacony, Mayfair and Holmesburg. Last year, 66 people were wounded by gunfire and 14 killed by gunfire in the district. ••
