Schools need our help

Our public schools are not being funded enough. Because of this, some schools are acquiring new and updated textbooks, enhancing their knowledge greatly. Meanwhile, other schools are still using mangled textbooks from 1990 or even older. This lack of funding creates a massive disadvantage for students attending less fortunate schools.

Schools across the nation have received less federal funding and the costs of supplies for the school is increasing.

There will always be a need for education and with a neverending increase of students every year, it will be hard to stabilize funding in Philly and even harder across the nation.

If we want our community to be able to grow economically, we need to fund all schools more. Schools that have proper funding will have more of their graduates achieve higher-paying jobs.

We could do something about this. There are far too many overused supplies in our school system. We can stop this lack of funding among our neighborhood public schools by advocating in your newspaper or website to bring awareness to the practically nonexistent funding among our schools.

If we are not giving every school enough funding to provide quality textbooks and better environments to learn in, then we are essentially screwing our future generations.

Please! No more taxes

It didn’t take Mayor Kenney long to raise taxes. Look at all of the revenue Philadelphia will lose from Pepsi, like when Nabisco moved out.

Whatever happened to Nutter’s temporary eight-percent sales tax? He’s gone but the tax is still here. The property reassessments, the $2 cigarette tax — all supposed to be for the schools. Where is that money?

Gov. Wolf is drooling to raise the state tax. I’m lucky enough to be on a pension and Social Security, don’t have to pay state tax. But you bet it’s coming. “For the Schools” Democrat taxes never end.

If they could, they would tax the air that we breathe.

Get rid of the greedy

Are you tired of not having your voice heard in the city? Taxes keep rising and the stipulations are put upon us. The grocery tax is the latest example of what is going on. We must find out who the legislators are who are imposing this tax on us. Get their names and vote them out next election. This includes the mayor. Why aren’t important things put on the ballot for us to vote for instead of ridiculous issues that don’t even concern us?

There is plenty of revenue coming into this city to assist our public schools. Center City businesses pay Center City District fees, we pay real estate taxes, business privilege and occupancy taxes, and our sales tax is also very high. Where is the money going?

I think it should go to our school district. Lower the City Council members’ salaries, and go after the other legislators who are filling their pockets with our tax money that should be going to our public schools, especially 12 of the 17 members of City Council who have the perks of cars available to them that we pay for. Let’s take charge again and let anyone running in this city for a political job hear our voice or we’re going to get them out.

Flags look great in NE

As a former resident of the Mayfair-Holmesburg area, please convey my deep appreciation to the Mayfair Civic Association and/or whoever placed the flags along Rowland Avenue from Unruh to the park.

It was a thrill to see them and a totally wonderful asset to the neighborhood.

So many homes never display the flag at any holiday, and it is so very sad to neglect what the flag means and stands for.

Please thank whoever is responsible for a most wonderful display.
