Two armed robbers walked into a Frankford grocery store and asked for water ice before walking out with some cold, hard cash last month, Philadelphia police say. Investigators hope surveillance video will help them identify the crooks.
The suspects arrived at the store on the 1300 block of Unity St. at about 7:30 p.m. on July 23. Police did not identify the store by name. They ordered water ice from a 20-year-old male clerk, who began to scoop servings from a cold box. One of the bandits then removed a handgun from his waistband and passed it to his accomplice. The first robber then went behind the counter and punched the clerk several times with brass knuckles, forcing the victim to the ground. Both robbers then stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and fled westbound on Unity Street.
The guy with the brass knuckles was described as black, 15 to 20 years old and 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was unshaven and wore a blue and white shirt with green stripes on the back, light blue shorts and black sneakers. His accomplice was described as black, 15 to 20 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, with orange and red hair, a black shirt and orange shorts. He was last seen with a black handgun.
