Friends of Pennypack kicks off season with successful cleanup

The Friends of Pennypack Park’s volunteer crew returned to the woods on March 25 for the first of eight monthly cleanup events that will continue throughout the summer and into next fall.

Thirty-four volunteers spent a combined 83 hours removing 46 bags of trash and 1½ bags of recyclable cans from the park along Holme Avenue behind Nazareth Hospital.

Some of the larger pieces of debris removed from the woods included two stray trash cans, a chair, various sports equipment, a car muffler, a car seat, a road sign, tree planting sleeves, a “Got Junk?” sign, Styrofoam insulation and the top of a bedroom vanity.

The volunteers included JoElle and Olivia Steinmetz, Jason McConomy, Marianne Mari, Joan Henry-Graham, Marlen and Marquise Douglas, Rich Glaser, Jim Gardner, Jim and Sandy Stewart, Leo Magazzu III, Jay Mulholland, Tim McAndrews, Andrew Puzdrak, Roland Williams, Bernard Murray, Robert McMunn, Aidan McAroy, Erica McAroy, Dean Lynd, Marc McDowell, Marie Coyle, Tom Henry, Alan Kaminsky, Curtis Glenn, Val Dougherty, Dave Rosenblum, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Linda Davies, Kathy Volack, Katya Rebensky, Kevin Sweetra and Joyce Ferrero.

The next monthly cleanup will be on April 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and coincide with Earth Day. Volunteers will meet in the Little City parking lot off of Rhawn Street across from Holmehurst Avenue. Participants will notice that the city has begun to rebuild the footbridge spanning the creek between the parking lot and the Ed Kelly Amphitheater.

Volunteers are welcome to attend and should wear long pants and sleeves, along with sturdy, comfortable footwear. Bug spray and sunscreen are advised. Children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants may be eligible for community service credits. The FOPP will provide cleaning supplies and refreshments. The rain date is April 23.
