Full agenda at Lawncrest meeting

The Lawncrest Community Association had a full agenda at last week’s meeting.

Members heard from City Controller Alan Butkovitz; Rebecca Rhynhart, his challenger in the Democratic primary; and officials from the 2nd Police District, the Philadelphia Water Department and the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia.

In other news from the April 18 meeting:

• Members gave a standing ovation to Debra Mikus, who is retiring this week from the Free Library of Philadelphia. She headed the Lawncrest Library for nine years.

Meanwhile, the library, at 6098 Rising Sun Ave. (at Benner Street), will welcome Penn State master gardener Kathleen Halus on Saturday, May 6, at 2 p.m. Halus will discuss how to attract bees and other wildlife to gardens.

• Bill Conaway, of the Philadelphia Protestant Home, invited the public to a spaghetti and meatball dinner and bake sale on Thursday, April 27, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the social hall, 6500 Tabor Ave. The cost is $10, or $10.50 for takeout.

Conaway mentioned that the PPH auxiliary will hold its annual Victorian Tea Party on Sunday, June 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the social hall. Tickets cost $15 and can be bought in the business office on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. There will be tea sandwiches, treats, entertainment and door prizes.

• Crescentville United Methodist Church will host All Dolled Up Tea on Sunday, April 30, at 2 p.m. in its memorial hall, 412 Sentner St. The afternoon will include tea and a collection of dolls. Guests are invited to bring a favorite doll. Admission is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Call 215–745–7115 or 215–885–7069.

• The Lawncrest Recreation Center, 6000 Rising Sun Ave., will host an outdoor community yard sale on Saturday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spots cost $15. Call 215–685–0597.

• There will be a night market on Thursday, May 11, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Rising Sun Avenue, from Cottman Avenue to Tyson Avenue, in Burholme. The night will include food and live music.

• Plans are being made for the 102nd annual Lawncrest 4th of July Celebration. The parade will start at 9 a.m. and travel south along Rising Sun Avenue from Longshore Avenue to the Lawncrest Recreation Center at Comly Street. There will be an American flag-raising ceremony, flea market, food court, car show, children’s rides, bingo, live entertainment, paintball and fireworks.

• The Lawncrest Community Association will meet on Tuesday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at St. William parish hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. The group typically meets on the third Tuesday of the month, but moved up May’s meeting by a week because May 16 is primary election day. ••
