Auditions for fall musical to be held Sept. 6–7

The Actor’s Group, in association with the city Department of Parks and Recreation, will hold auditions for its fall show on Sept. 6 and 7 at Fox Chase Recreation Center, 7901 Ridgeway St.

The auditions will be for the show Legally Blonde Jr. The Musical. Roles are needed for young people age 6–20. No experience is needed, and everyone will receive a role. Practices will be held at Fox Chase Rec, and the show will be performed Nov. 17–19 at the Philadelphia Protestant Home.

JEVS needs applicants for Project WOW

The deadline is Sept. 10 to enroll in JEVS Human Services’ next Project WOW (World of Work) session.

The program starts Oct. 10.

Project WOW guides Philadelphia high school dropouts aged 18–24 through a 24-week program that offers hands-on training, a career diploma and GED test preparation. The program is no cost for eligible youth.

The program features an IT learning and training track, paid work experience, service learning projects, free SEPTA transpasses, financial incentives, a dedicated job coach and a pre-apprenticeship program.

Live TV broadcast at NE Regional Library

PhillyCAM, which operates the city’s public access television channel, will air a live broadcast at Northeast Regional Library as part of its new People’s Media Collection. The program will air on Saturday, Sept. 9, from noon to 1 p.m. It will highlight community histories, neighborhood residents and local talent.

The main floor of the library, 2228 Cottman Ave., will become a television studio with a live audience and special guests. The broadcast will include screenings of curated media minutes produced by community members, appearances by local artists and storytelling and demonstrations by community-based organizations. ••

Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima anniversary

The public is invited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima at a Fatima Holy Hour for World Peace on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at St. Bartholomew Church, 5560 Harbison Avenue.

The evening will include adoration, recitation of the rosary and procession of the Fatima statue.

Guests can bring a flower to honor Our Lady. ••

Graveyard tour at All Saints Church

The History Committee of All Saints’ Church, 9601 Frankford Ave. in Torresdale, will be presenting a colonial graveyard tour, “In the Beginning…,” on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 4 p.m.

The public is welcome to see where the original 1772 church once stood and walk the perimeter of the original 1¼ acres of ground while hearing the stories of the early settlers who lived in the area and are buried in the graveyard.

Guests should wear comfortable shoes. The tour takes about 45 minutes. Parking is located behind the church. The entrance is on Eden Street.

All donations benefit the graveyard restoration project. In the event of inclement weather, the tour will be canceled. For information, call 215–637–8787. ••

Free smoking cessation classes offered

Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., will offer smoking and tobacco cessation classes on upcoming Wednesdays.

The first series will take place from Sept. 13 to Oct. 25. The second series will take place from Nov. 1 to Dec. 13.

Classes will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the first-floor cancer team conference room. Registration is required. Call 215–335–7727. ••

White’s Kids Fest on Sept. 9

State Rep. Martina White (R-170th dist.) is inviting families from across the Northeast to her third annual Kids Fest on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Somerton Youth Organization, 1400 Southampton Road. The festival will feature free food, games, inflatables and other activities. Representatives from city and state government and local sports and community groups will showcase programs and services available for children. Call 215–330–3711. ••

Dance registration at Chalfont Rec

Registration for Chalfont Recreation Center’s 2017–18 dance program will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, from noon to 2 p.m. at the playground, 4330–34 Deerpath Lane.

Chalfont Dancers offers creative, ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop and adult tap/jazz dance for people 3 or older. Classes meet once a week for an hour. They run from the first week of October until the end of March. Cost is $140 per year, per class.

A dress rehearsal, pictures and recital are held in the early spring.

Produce vouchers for 60-plus

State Rep. Ed Neilson will be providing free produce vouchers for eligible low-income people 60 or older from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12, in his district office at 16 Old Ashton Road.

The vouchers are through the state Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, which provides fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs from approved farmers in Pennsylvania.

To be eligible for the vouchers, individuals must have an income of less than $22,211, or less than $30,044 for married couples.

Residents interested in obtaining the produce vouchers must bring identification. While an appointment is not needed, residents can save time on the day of the event by calling Neilson’s office at 215–330–3714 to schedule a time to pick up the vouchers. ••

Doo Wop Festival is Sept. 10

The fourth annual Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival will take place on Sunday, Sept. 10, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road. All proceeds will benefit the FOP survivors fund. The festival will feature 12 vocal groups, oldies disc jockeys, dancing and record collector vendors.

Open house for dental assistants

Brightwood Career Institute will host an open house exhibiting its Dental Assistant diploma program on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the campus located at 177 Franklin Mills Blvd.

The event is free and open to the public and will include program demonstrations and opportunities for giveaways, including toothbrushes, mouthwash, floss and toothpaste.

Rally for fallen servicemen is Sunday

The March for Justice will take place on Sunday, Sept. 10, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Pennypack Park amphitheater stage, near the park entrance at Cresco Avenue and Welsh Road in Holmesburg. The event will call attention to Extortion 17, the call sign of a military helicopter shot down by a Taliban rocket-launched grenade in Afghanistan in 2011.

The incident claimed the lives of 38 people — 30 Americans and eight Afghans — and a U.S. military dog. Among the casualties was Michael Strange, a 25-year-old who grew up on Algard Street in Wissinoming and graduated from St. Bartholomew Elementary School and North Catholic High School.

Much blame for the tragedy has been placed on restrictions on military rules of engagement implemented by the Obama administration.

Charlie Strange, Michael’s dad, met with President Donald Trump in June, leading to a new investigation by the Department of Defense’s inspector general.

Strange will speak at the march. Among the other speakers will be attorney Larry Klayman and Cole McCafferty, a 12-year-old from Old City who is a staunch Trump supporter. ••

Women’s health fair in Frankford

State Rep. Jason Dawkins will sponsor a Women’s Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Northeast Frankford Boys and Girls Club, 1709 Kinsey St.

The health fair will feature services from fields such as cancer care, health insurance, behavioral health, medical equipment, counseling, opioid addiction help, sexual violence prevention and fitness.

Dawkins and his staff will provide assistance for constituents applying for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Medicaid and the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program. Local and state organizations will also be available on site.

Block party Sept. 9 at local church

Grace Community Bible Church, 648 Knorr St. (at Oxford Avenue), will host a free block party on Saturday, Sept. 9, from noon to 3 p.m.

The afternoon will include carnival-type games, food, prizes, Bible stories and face painting. Kids up to age 12 must be accompanied by a parent.

Concert in the park

The Pennypack Park Concert Series will conclude on Wednesday, Sept. 6, with a performance by Think Pink Floyd, a Pink Floyd tribute band. The concert will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Ed Kelly Amphitheater, near the park entrance at Welsh Road and Cresco Avenue.

The Delaware Valley Veterans Home, 2701 Southampton Road, will host its annual block party and car show on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will include canvas painting, a moonbounce, music, face-painting, crafters, vendors, a flea market, carnival games, bake sale, basket raffles, a clown, balloon art and food for sale by Fat Jack’s BBQ.

Wildwood trip planned

The group 55 Plus is running a trip to Wildwood, New Jersey, Sept. 10–14. The trip will include five days and four nights. The cost is $420 per person for double occupancy and $524 for single occupancy.

Honey festival at Glen Foerd

The eighth annual Philadelphia Honey Festival will take place Sept. 7, 9 and 10 at three locations, including Glen Foerd on the Delaware, 5001 Grant Ave.

Since 2010, the festival has been held the weekend after Labor Day.

Glen Foerd kicks off the first day of the festival from 5 to 9 p.m. Honey Happy Hour will feature mead and honey beer sampling. The monthly Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m., with John Cambridge, of the Philadelphia Insectarium, as the keynote speaker.

Help available for those mourning

The Spiritual Care Department at Nazareth Hospital is offering a monthly grief support session for anyone who is dealing with any form of loss. The sessions are designed to help those grieving by offering extra support and companionship in their time of need.

Any and all family members or friends are welcome to take part in the meetings.

The grief support group sessions will take place on the second Tuesday of every month, from 1 to 2 p.m., at Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., in the administrative conference room on the first floor. The next session is on Sept. 12. To register, call 215–335–7797. ••

Autism ride to be held Sept. 9

The AJ Foundation for Children with Autism will sponsor a bicycle ride to benefit education and treatment services for children with autism on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Lower Makefield Township Park, 1100 Edgewood Road in Yardley.

Registration opens at 7 a.m. Bicycle rides start at 8 a.m., and there are four starting times for four different distances.

The AJ Foundation in 2000 opened the Comprehensive Learning Center, a private school for kids with autism.
