Beer garden coming to Burholme Park

The Parks on Tap Traveling Beer Garden will be at Burholme Park, Cottman and Central avenues, from Wednesday through Sunday, Sept. 20–24.

The event is sponsored by the city Department of Parks and Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy, and will feature fresh food, beer on tap, wine, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages in an outdoor environment. Organizers promise comfortable chairs and hammocks and clean restrooms.

Hours are Wednesday and Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 1 to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 10 p.m. For details, visit parksontap.com ••

Special Mass Friday at St. Martha

St. Martha Catholic Church, 11301 Academy Road, will host a charismatic Mass and healing service on Friday, Sept. 22. There will be prayer and praise at 6:45 p.m., followed by a liturgy at 7:15.

Health fair to be held Monday

Holy Redeemer Lafayette, 8580 Verree Road, will host a health fair on Monday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be vendors, free chair massages, a tai chi demonstration at 11 a.m., a healthy foods demonstration at noon and an aerobics class at 1 p.m. ••

Shredding event on Saturday

State Rep. John Taylor (R-177th dist.) will sponsor a free community shredding event to give residents the opportunity to safely destroy personal paperwork on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lowe’s parking lot, 3800 Aramingo Ave. There is a limit of four boxes of papers per constituent.

Pro-life rally and Mass on Sunday

The Office for Life and Family of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia invites all people to rally and walk in support of the sanctity of life from conception to natural death on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 3:30 p.m. at Sister Cities Park, 18th Street and Logan Square.

Local groups participating in the rally include members of the Knights of Columbus, Philadelphia Guild of the Catholic Medical Association, Pro-Life Union of Greater Philadelphia and students from Archdiocesan high schools. A Mass will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 18th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The celebrant will be Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. ••

Autism event Saturday in Frankford

State Rep. Jason Dawkins (D-179th dist.) will host an autism parent café on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon at his district office, 4667 Paul St. The event will feature resources for parents, caretakers and educators: For information, call 215–744–7901. ••

Hiring fair for military veterans

Military veterans and their spouses are invited to attend a hiring fair on Monday, Sept. 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Union League, 140 S. Broad St.

There will be more than 50 employers hiring for immediate openings. Human resources professionals will review resumes, and professional attire will be free.

Jewish holiday services, programs at KleinLife

KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., will offer Jewish high holiday services and programs that are free and open to the public.

Services are scheduled for Erv Rosh Hashanah on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 6:45 p.m. and on Rosh Hashanah on Thursday, Sept. 21, beginning at 9 a.m.

Kol Nidre services will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29.

Yom Kippur services will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 30, beginning at 9 a.m. Yiskor services on Yom Kippur will be held at 11:30 a.m., noon and 12:30 p.m. Evening services are scheduled for 5:15 p.m., and after yontif ends at 7:29 p.m., there will be a Havdalah service at 7:30 p.m.

Also, KleinLife will be conducting a Yom Kippur Yiskor program on Thursday, Sept. 28, beginning at 10 a.m. ••

Free senior SEPTA pass day and fair

Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave., will host a free senior citizen SEPTA pass day and fair on Friday, Sept. 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is presented by state Rep. Kevin Boyle.

Individuals 65 and older can bring photo identification or a birth certificate for a free senior SEPTA pass.

There will be representatives from CARIE, KleinLife, Clarifi, APPRISE and AARP with information on Medicare, advocacy, credit/debt and legal and social services. Call 215–685–0501. ••

Upcoming event at Older Adult Center

The Northeast Older Adult Center, 8101 Bustleton Ave. in Rhawnhurst, will host a Spanish heritage dance on Friday, Sept. 22, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Philadelphia Matryoshka Festival is Sunday

The Philadelphia Matryoshka Festival will be held on Sunday, Sept. 24, from noon to 6 p.m. at Polanka Park, 3258 Knights Road, Bensalem, celebrating the culture of Russian-speaking people including Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Armenian, Georgian and Uzkek.

Matryoshka is the Philadelphia Russian-speaking community’s largest annual festival and a great opportunity to gather outdoors for an afternoon of music, food, friends and fun. It’s also a great opportunity for businesses to share their products and services with a large community, and for musicians and artists to display their talents.

There will be many food vendors, wine tasting, professional artists, children’s groups, a cash bar, prizes, raffles, awards and competitions. The family friendly atmosphere includes face painting, clowns, arts and crafts, a moon bounce, cotton candy and popcorn.

Fall Festival on Saturday

City Councilman Bobby Henon is sponsoring a fall festival on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along the 6700 and 6800 blocks of Torresdale Avenue in Tacony.

SEPTA photos at Taylor’s office

The district office of state Rep. John Taylor (R-177th dist.) will take SEPTA photos every Wednesday in September from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Learn more about health care program

Orleans Technical College, 2770 Red Lion Road, the career training school operated by JEVS Human Services, will hold an information session on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. for its new health care training program. Classes start on Oct. 16.

The school’s first training program in the healthcare field was developed in response to a growing workplace need. Orleans will train students to become patient services representatives, an entry-level position in hospitals, doctors’ offices and medical facilities.

Orleans Tech will employ classroom education, on-the-job experience, partnerships with employers and a start-to-finish student support system with job-search assistance.

Patriot Tour planned at Merriam

The Patriot Tour will come to the Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St., on Friday, Oct. 20.

The event will feature retired U.S. Navy SEALs Marcus Luttrell and David Goggins; Taya Kyle, widow of U.S. Navy sniper Chris Kyle; and retired Army Capt. Chad Fleming.

Tickets are $45, $65 and $85, with limited VIP tickets available for $225. VIP tickets include a meet and greet and photo with all four speakers, as well as signed copies of American Wife and Lone Survivor.

Community festival in Holmesburg

Holmesburg Baptist Church will host its fourth annual community festival on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Holmesburg Baptist Church, 7927 Frankford Ave. The outdoor/indoor celebration will include representatives from PECO, Jeanes Hospital, AARP, Philadelphia Gas Works, Susan Komen for the Cure and Health Partners.

There will be free blood pressure checks by Community Care Center and flu shots by Rite Aid of Cottman Avenue, with a health insurance card. The day will also include free crafts, an appearance by the Free Library of Philadelphia, a game train, prizes and snack bar.

Nonperishable food items will be accepted for donation to the King’s Kitchen operated by Holmesburg United Methodist Church. All donors will receive a coupon for a free hot dog and water. The event will take place rain or shine. ••
