Teen chat room at NE Regional

Shawna’s House Teen Chat Room is a teen mentoring network for boys and girls ages 13 to 18.

There are group discussions and community service projects. Meetings will take place in the meeting room of Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave., from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on the following Saturdays: March 3, April 7, May 5 and June 2.

Workshops on apprenticeships

State Rep. Jason Dawkins (D-179th dist.) will host a series of workshops designed to educate people on apprenticeship opportunities with local industries.

Sessions will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on the following Thursdays: March 1, 15, and 29. The site will be Dawkins’ district office at 4667 Paul St.

The workshops will provide information and overviews of local labor unions’ apprenticeship application and testing process. Members from local unions also will be in attendance to offer information and answer questions. To RSVP, call 215–744–7901. ••

Businesses can apply for grants

The deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 28 for businesses to apply for a grant from The Merchants Fund.

To be eligible, businesses must be established in Philadelphia for at least three years.

Stabilization grants are available for up to $10,000. Loan matching grants are open for up to $20,000.

Dr. Seuss birthday at Holmesburg Library

Holmesburg Library, 7810 Frankford Ave., will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a reading of The Cat in the Hat on Friday, March 2, at 10 a.m.

Preschool and early elementary-aged children will also make Thing 1 and Thing 2 puppets. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Holmesburg Library.

Bingo, prizes at Presentation BVM

Presentation BVM will host Bits & Bags Bingo on Friday, March 2, at its church hall, 100 Old Soldiers Road in Cheltenham.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m., with games beginning at 7. The cost is $35 and includes, hoagie, dessert and drink. The event is BYOB and open to people 21 and older. There will be a 50/50 and prizes.

AOH 39 to show movie of Irish murders

Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 39, 7229 Tulip St., will show No Stone Unturned on Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m. The documentary, by Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney, investigates the 1994 murder of six men who were watching the Ireland vs. Italy World Cup soccer match in the Heights Bar in Loughinisland, County Down, Northern Ireland. No one has ever been charged in the case, but Gibney identifies the killers in the film.

After the film, there will be a question-and-answer session with Gibney, producer Trevor Birney, attack survivor Aidan O’Toole, surviving family members and family lawyer Niall Murphy. The donation is $10. ••

Colorectal cancer event at Nazareth

Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., will host a “Dine with the Docs” event on Wednesday, March 7, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the DiBello Conference Center on the first floor in the Marian Building.

The theme of the free event is “Colorectal Cancer: Preventable, Treatable, Beatable,” in honor of Colorectal Awareness Month. Participants will learn about colorectal cancer, risk factors and strategies for treatment from Dr. Mark S. Codella, chairman of Nazareth’s Department of Medicine.

Gallery lecture at Ryerss Museum & Library

Temple’s Carol Harris-Shapiro will reveal secrets of the Asian gallery at Ryerss Museum & Library on Sunday, March 4, at 1 p.m.

Park cleanup to be held on Saturday

Friends of Poquessing Watershed will be holding a park cleanup on Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Walton’s Run, across from Archbishop Ryan High School.

Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing, including long sleeves, long pants and sturdy shoes. Grabbers, trash bags and gloves are provided. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Community service hours are available. The rain date is March 10. ••

Scholarship deadline is Thursday

The deadline is Thursday, March 1, to apply for the Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia for the 2018–19 school year. The scholarships are available to low-income Philadelphia families who have children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The scholarships, drawn randomly, are for four years.

Breast cancer screening on Friday

State Sen. John Sabatina Jr. (D-5th dist.) and Fox Chase Cancer Center will be partnering to host an upcoming breast cancer screening event.

The event will be held at Sabatina’s district office at 12361 Academy Road on Friday, March 2, at 10 a.m. The Fox Chase Mobile Mammography Van will be on site.

To qualify for a screening, participants must be 40 years of age or over, and have a prescription from their doctor.

They also may not be breastfeeding or have breastfed within the last nine months, must not have had a breast cancer diagnosis within the last three years, or a mammogram in 12 months.

Dr. Seuss event at CORA Services

CORA Services, 8540 Verree Road, will host a Dr. Seuss event on Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The day will include photos with Dr. Seuss characters, interactive readings of Dr. Seuss books, carnival games, face-painting, arts and crafts and resources for parents and educators. ••

Job fair in Bustleton set for March 10

State Rep. Jared Solomon (D-202nd dist.) will sponsor a job fair on March 10 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bustleton Learning Center, 6600 Bustleton Ave.

Visitors will meet with representatives from local businesses, PA CareerLink, city and state government agencies, unions and recruiters.

Killer of bin Laden to speak in Ivyland

The Michael Strange Foundation will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, April 21, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Spring Mill Country Club & Manor, 171 Jacksonville Road in Ivyland.

The speakers will be Rob O’Neill, who killed Osama bin Laden; U.S. Navy SEAL Thomas “Drago” Dzieran; and Vietnam War veteran and radio host Joe Griffies.

The evening will include dinner and an open bar.

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Strange was killed in eastern Afghanistan in 2011. He was among 38 killed when their Chinook helicopter was shot down by insurgents using a rocket-propelled grenade.

Strange, 25, grew up on the 6100 block of Algard St. in Wissinoming and graduated from St. Bartholomew Elementary School and North Catholic High School. He signed up for the military in August 2004, two months after graduating from North Catholic. He was deployed once to Iraq and three times to Afghanistan, and was engaged to be married.

Tickets cost $100, and proceeds benefit the Michael Strange Foundation, which provides support and services to families of fallen service members.

Pre-order Eagles championship film

Cinedigm, the National Football League and NFL Films will team up to bring fans Super Bowl LII Champions: Philadelphia Eagles, a film made available on Blu-Ray Combo Pack ($34.93), DVD ($24.99) and Digital HD ($12.99).

Sports Hall of Fame banquet at Cannstatter

The City All-Star Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 27th annual induction ceremony on Tuesday, April 10, at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road.

The inductees are Mike Borski, Gil Brooks, Bill Edger, Annie Bobiak Kroes, Jeff Maconaghy, Jack Maley, Jameel McClain, Mike McCloskey, Mickey McGroarty, Ralph Ricapito, Mark Singer and Bill Travers.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 7.

Tickets cost $50, or $500 for a table of 10.

Comedy fundraiser set for veterans

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 Auxiliary will hold a comedy fundraiser on Saturday, March 10, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Feasterville Fire Company Hall, 20 Irving Place, in Feasterville-Trevose.

The venue is near the intersection of Bustleton Pike and Street Road.

The show will feature Joey Callahan and friends.

Tickets cost $45 and include food, beer and wine. Proceeds will benefit charities for veterans.
