Memorial service to be held for murdered child

America’s Unknown Child was found dead by police in 1957. The investigation into his death remains open.

The annual memorial service for America’s Unknown Child will take place on Sunday, March 4, at 1:30 p.m. across from 722 Susquehanna Road in Fox Chase.

Boy Scout Nicholas Kerschbaum, of Wilmington, Delaware, secured a historical marker for America’s Unknown Child, originally known as The Boy in the Box.

The boy was found dead by police officers Elmer Palmer and Samuel Weinstein on Feb. 26, 1957. The investigation into his death remains open and is the longest-running open homicide investigation in the history of the Philadelphia Police Department.

Boy Scout Troop 367, chartered by St. Christopher Roman Catholic Church, will join Kerschbaum in conducting the service. ••
