Philadelphia residents can sign up for free tree giveaway

The Somerton Civic Association and MaST Community Charter are giving away free trees.

The Somerton Civic Association and MaST Community Charter School won a grant to host a tree giveaway this spring through TreePhilly’s Yard Tree Giveaway program.

Northeast residents will have the chance to obtain free trees to plant in their yards.

The giveaway will be held on Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to noon, at MaST’s campus at 1800 E. Byberry Road. One-hundred trees will be available.

Anyone who would like a free tree must sign up online in advance of the giveaway and select their tree while supplies last. A link to the signup sites will be available at facebook.com/SomertonCivic

Participants may register for up to two trees.

Trees provided through this program must be planted in the ground (a grassy area or lawn) on private property in Philadelphia, and may not be planted in a container or in the sidewalk. Participants will also receive a planting and care demonstration provided by TreePhilly, free mulch and educational materials.

John Swoyer, CEO for MaST, said, “I am very proud to be partnering with the Somerton Civic Association and its members to play an active role in distributing the awarded trees. Our students and local families will appreciate the opportunity to add to the green effort in the community and bring about yet another improvement in the local households around the area.”

“We’re glad to join with MaST to help our neighbors maintain the greenery that does so much to beautify and to distinguish Somerton and the whole Northeast,” said Somerton Civic Association President Chris Bordelon.
