Block Gives Back volunteers clean up Wissinoming

They removed 16 bags of debris.

Making a difference in the community: Volunteers cleaned up the 2100 block of Carver St. and filled 16 bags with debris.

The Block Gives Back was in Wissinoming on Saturday for the third part of its 4 Blocks in 4 Weeks street-cleaning series.

The group, made up mostly of young men who have been friends since their days at Abraham Lincoln High School, cleaned up the 2100 block of Carver St.

Home Depot donated large paper trash bags, and the volunteers filled 16 bags with debris. About 15 kids who live on the street assisted in the cleanup, working in teams of three under the direction of Block Gives Back captains.

The party that followed included pizza, sandwiches donated by the new ShopRite near Harbison Avenue and Bridge Street, Insomnia cookies, doughnuts, soda, coffee, water and music.

Kids received T-shirts and were able to ride bikes, scooters, Hoverboards and skateboards, jump on pogo sticks, chalk the street and play basketball, football and soccer.

Besides cleaning streets, the Block Gives Back feeds the homeless each month and engages in other good deeds throughout the year.

Next Saturday, the Block Gives Back will clean the 2800 block of N. 26th St. in North Philadelphia.
