Groundbreaking ceremony for new athletic center is Saturday

A groundbreaking ceremony is set for Saturday, May 5, when Abington Friends School, 575 Washington Lane in Jenkintown, will construct the Richard N. Berman Athletics Center

The $9 million facility will be a major addition to the campus of the historic independent Quaker school.

The new athletics center will replace the school’s 50-year-old Hallowell Gymnasium and will be nearly three times larger. The new 32,895-square-foot, stone-and-brick building will house a competition-size basketball court, two practice courts, a large fitness center, offices, a training room, team and locker rooms as well as a lobby and multi-purpose room that can be used for school and community events. The new building is expected to open in February 2019.

Head of School Richard F. Nourie said the school was honored to collaborate with the Berman family in naming the building for Richard N. Berman, a dedicated family man, beloved community member and successful businessman, who passed away in 2011.

AFS parent Marc Berman, one of Richard’s brothers, said his family was motivated to give because it wanted AFS “to be the best version of itself it could be.”

Plans for the new athletics center were approved by Jenkintown Borough Council and supported by neighbors of the AFS campus. The Abington Township Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the school’s plans. Architects at WRT Design in Philadelphia designed the new building. Anchor Management Group of Conshohocken is the construction manager. A campaign has raised $8.125 million for the new athletics center. Abington Friends School enrolls 583 students from early childhood classes through 12th grade. ••
