After a successful inaugural year, the Krewstown Road Festival will return with more fun and historical activities.
The historic Krewstown Road Festival is coming back for its second year.
On June 3, pedestrians will once again have access to the Krewstown Road Bridge over Pennypack Creek, which is more than 200 years old. The festival was created last year to highlight the lush history of the area. Several hundred people turned out.
Festival goers will have access to more than half a mile of open street that will feature activities, exhibits and demonstrations.
“Every day, hundreds of cars, trucks and SEPTA buses meander their way through this stretch of Krewstown,” said Dave Rosenbum, a member of the festival’s planning committee. “By opening the road only to pedestrians and bicyclists, we are giving everyone an opportunity to walk, bike, play and explore everything around there.”
One of the main attractions is taking tours of the area, guided or self-motivated. Those who bring appropriate gear will be able to participate in a guided mountain biking tour. Some sites of interest include the Baptismal Rock along Pennypack Creek and easy access to both sides of the Pennepack Baptist Church’s burial grounds. The Church will also be celebrating its 330th birthday this year.
Other activities include old-time blacksmithing and woodworking workshops, an American flag retirement ceremony, a parade led by local Boy Scouts troops and a ham radio demonstration by the Holmesburg Amateur Radio Club. More activities will be announced as it draws closer.
Rosenbum said he’s most excited for this year’s photography contest, which he said will be bigger and better than last year’s.
“Last year, we had some really beautiful photos that showed off various parts of Northeast Philadelphia, including its nature and architecture,” he said. “It’s always cool to see how others see the Northeast.”
The event runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Krewstown Road will be closed to traffic from Algon to Bloomfield avenues from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Krewstown Road Festival is a partnership of the Pennepack Baptist Historical Foundation, Friends of Pennypack Park, Councilman Brian O’Neill’s office, the Greater Bustleton Civic League and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.
