Parks on Tap on Wednesday night

Ryerss Museum & Library, 7370 Central Ave., in Burholme Park, will host Parks on Tap on Wednesday, July 18, from 5 to 10 p.m.

There will be a happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. The museum and library will open at 5:30 p.m. Tours are $5. Refreshments will be served at 6:30, with face painting and games. At 8:30 p.m., Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be shown outdoors.

Fox Chase Library Art Group looking for new members

The Fox Chase Library Art Group is celebrating its 17th anniversary by welcoming new members.

Current members cover a wide range of expertise, style and medium, from beginners to advanced.

Favorite activities include watercolors, acrylic and pastel.

The group offers critiques, shows and parties. There are no fees.

Sessions are every Monday from 1 to 3 at Fox Chase Library, 501 Rhawn St. ••

Block party and car show at vet home

The Delaware Valley Veterans Nursing Home, 2701 Southampton Road (at Roosevelt Boulevard), will be having its yearly block party and car show on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Texas Roadhouse will offer meal platters for $5. A Taste of Artistry will present canvas painting for children and adults at a cost of $10 for a pre-drawn canvas, with to-go sets also available. The day will include carnival games and prizes, bounce houses, a clown doing balloon art, face painting, a craft fair and flea market, basket raffles, a petting zoo and disc jockey.

Spaces for crafters and vendors are available for $20.

Breast cancer screenings on Friday

State Rep. Kevin Boyle will partner with Fox Chase Cancer Center to host breast cancer screenings outside his office at 7801-A Hasbrook Ave.

The annual mobile mammography event will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 20. Those interested in receiving a breast cancer screening are required to make an appointment.

Participants must be 40 or older; provide the name and address of their doctor; receive a prescription from a doctor; must not be breastfeeding nor have breastfed within the last nine months; must not have had a breast cancer diagnosis within the last three years; must not be under treatment for breast cancer; must not have had a mammogram in 12 months; and must be able to board the van and stand while being examined.

Van Halen tribute Wednesday night

The Pennypack Park Music Festival will continue on Wednesday, July 18, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. with a performance by Romeo Delight, a tribute to Van Halen.

Concerts take place at the Ed Kelly Amphitheater, near the park entrance at Welsh Road and Cresco Avenue. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

The rest of the lineup is Hand Me Down World, tribute to the Guess Who (July 25); Idol Kings, tribute to Journey (Aug. 8); Black Dog, tribute to Led Zeppelin (Aug. 15); LeCompt (Aug. 22); and Think Pink Floyd, tribute to Pink Floyd (Sept. 5).

Music and drama camp at local church

Crescentville United Methodist Church, 412 E. Sentner St., is holding its annual music and drama camp through Friday, July 20, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The camp is for kids in kindergarten (must be 5 by Sept. 1) through recent eighth-grade graduates.

Participants will learn and perform a children’s musical. The camp will feature Bible stories, T-shirts, crafts, songs and snacks. The cost is $5.

Free weight-loss program seeks members

The Trevose Behavior Modification Program is taking new members.

The free weight-loss program is open to people who need to lose 20 to 80 pounds. Meetings are held Wednesdays at 5 p.m. at the Philadelphia Protestant Home, at Martins Mill Road and Tabor Avenue.

McMenamin ShopRite honored

State and city representatives were on hand at the 47th annual RSVP volunteer luncheon at Philmont Country Club to present special commendations from the House of Representatives and Senate and Council recognizing the McMenamin family, owners of ShopRite supermarkets, as recipients of the Community Leadership Award.

Rhoda Stein, board chairwoman of RSVP Philadelphia, presented the organization’s Community Leadership Award to Bria McMenamin and Kevin McMenamin on behalf of their family, who own ShopRite supermarkets. John Eskate, director of RSVP Philadelphia, and Andre Krug, president and CEO of KleinLife, sponsor of RSVP, joined in the presentation.

Also among those honoring ShopRite were state Reps. Kevin Boyle and Martina White; state Sen. John Sabatina Jr.; and Fred Hess, chief of constituent services for Councilman Al Taubenberger. ••

Ex-Eagle owns Laundromat

Former Eagles running back and kick returner James Betterson owns and operates BetterClean Laundry, 6391 Oxford Ave.

Betterson, 63, who retired in 1978, pivoted into laundry two years ago with the rejuvenation of a 3,400-square-foot store.

Betterson signed with the Eagles in 1977 as a free agent, playing 23 games over two seasons.

He worked in sales before buying the laundry, which had a grand opening that attracted former Eagles coach Dick Vermeil and former Eagles wide receiver Harold Carmichael.

Pricing ranges from $3.49 for a 20-pound wash (plus 25 cents for extra wash or rinse) to $9.99 (plus 60-cent enhancements) for an 80-pounder. ••

Russian Festival Concert to be held at Temple Performing Arts Center

The Russian Festival Concert will take place on Saturday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Temple Performing Arts Center, 1837 N. Broad St.

The concert is part of a convention, running through Saturday at Valley Forge Casino Resort.

The concert will feature an 80-piece Russian folk instrument orchestra, conducted by David Cooper. There will also be appearances by ensembles from across the United States and virtuoso soloists on the balalaika and domra instruments from Russia and Ukraine. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Benefit car show on Aug. 5

The third annual Doc’s Rock the Block Car Show will take place on Sunday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Doc Bresler’s Cavity Busters, 240 Geiger Road.

The event is held in memory of Dr. David A. “Doc” Bresler, a car enthusiast and charitable fundraiser.

Car registration is $20, and prizes will be awarded.

The day will also include live music, a DJ, raffles, a 50–50 and food vendors.

Proceeds will benefit the Sunshine Foundation and the Temple Dental Haiti Club Foundation.

The rain date is Aug. 12.
