Holy Family introduces new nursing program

University was recently granted state approval to start a Family Nurse Practitioner track.

Holy Family University’s School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions was recently granted state approval to introduce a new track in its Doctor in Nursing Practice program.

The new track, “Family/Individual Across the Lifespan Certified Register Nurse Practitioner,” will be directed by Dr. Mary Francis Suter.

The addition of the Family Nurse Practitioner track will allow future nurses to discover how to assess, diagnose and treat routine medical conditions and explore strategies for practicing preventive healthcare for individuals and families, the university said.

“Our program is unique,” Suter said in a statement. “The blended class format offers students flexibility while maintaining a close relationship to faculty members.”

The Family Nurse Practitioner track is designed with two entry points — one for students who have completed a master’s degree in nursing and wish to become a family nurse practitioner at the doctoral level. The second entry point is for post-Bachelor of Science in Nursing students who wish to pursue their degree to achieve family nurse practitioner specialization. At the end of the program, students will be prepared and eligible to sit for the national FNP certification exam, according to the university.

“The introduction of the Doctor of Nursing Practice/Family Nurse Practitioner program is a significant step forward for nursing instruction at Holy Family,” said Dr. Michael Markowitz, vice president of academic affairs, in a statement.
