Enjoy Jazz & Holiday Shopping

A Jazz & Holiday Shopping Event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at United Methodist Church of the Redeemer, 1128 Cottman Ave. (at Lawndale Avenue).

The Blu Dogz Jazz Band will perform.

Live nativity to be held Sunday

United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd, 10901 Calera Road, will offer a live nativity on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Guests will be treated to hot chocolate as they view the Christmas story.

Hope for the Holidays service

Immanuel Lutheran Church, 14100 Worthington Road, will host Hope for the Holidays, a worship experience of encouragement and hope, on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2:30 p.m. The afternoon will include prayers, scripture, music, fellowship and light refreshments.

Vote to help local nonprofit organizations

Philadelphia Federal Credit Union has launched its annual giving campaign and is encouraging community members to visit pfcu.com/givingcampaign to vote for one of three local nonprofit organizations they want the credit union to support this holiday season.

Through Jan. 1 (or until 1,000 votes are reached), PFCU will make a $5 donation for each vote the charities receive, up to $5,000.

By voting on PFCU’s website, voters can determine how PFCU distributes $5,000 to the following nonprofits: Depaul USA, which helps the homeless; HAVEN Women’s House, which assists homeless female veterans; and Make the World Better, which backs public space revitalization projects. ••

Donate toys at O’Neill’s offices

City Councilman Brian O’Neill and the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program are teaming up again to provide toys to less fortunate children in the community this holiday season.

Residents can drop off new and unwrapped toys at any of O’Neill’s five offices.

Concert Sunday at St. William church

The St. William Concert Series will continue on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. in the lower church, 6200 Rising Sun Ave. Free parking is available in the MaST II Charter School lot, across from the church, which is handicapped accessible.

Advent, Christmas services announed

Redemption Lutheran Church, at Bustleton Avenue and Rhawn Street, will hold services on Sundays, Dec. 16 and 23, at 9:45 a.m. The church will also offer a meditative Advent Compline service on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m.

The congregation welcomes the community for a Christmas Eve candlelight family service at 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24. Christmas music will begin at 3:30 p.m.  Redemption will hold its Christmas Day service at 10 a.m.

Learn about weight-loss surgery

On Friday, Dec. 14, Nazareth Hospital will host a free bariatric information session for the community to educate patients about weight-loss surgery options and support services. Participants will be able to speak with Nazareth’s bariatric surgeons. The session will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in Nazareth’s DiBello Conference Room, 2601 Holme Ave. Registration is required.

John Birch Society to meet on Tuesday

The John Birch Society will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, Rhawn and Ditman streets.

A video, Constitutional War Powers and The Enemy Within, will be shown as part of the series The Constitution Is the Solution. The motto of the John Birch Society is “Less Government, More Responsibility and – With God’s Help – A Better World.” ••
