Last year, 125 Friends of Pennypack Park volunteers participated in six cleanups.
In all, they removed 256 bags of trash and 15 bags of cans.
Those who took part in more than half the cleanups were John Broscius, Linda Davies, Edward Davis, Joyce Ferrero, Rich Glaser, Alan Kaminsky, Nance Kerns, Dean Lynd, Tim McAndrews, Robert McMunn, Marian Rossi, George Scholl, Ralph Smith, Kevin Sweetra, Kathy Volack and Audrey Walmsley.
Groups that participated were Baden-Powell Service Association, Boy Scout Troop 252, Friendship Bray Chapter of DeMolay, St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Sandmeyer Cares and the Young Leadership Network of the Greater Northeast Chamber of Commerce.
The family of Danielle Calhoun-Lopez celebrated her life by coming out to clean the park.
Assisting at the cleanups was the Trees & Trails crew that brought equipment and bags and brought the bags to a central collection point. They are Joyce Ferrero, Kevin Sweetra, George Scholl and Andrew Puzdrak. Audrey Walmsley manned the head table, keeping track of the volunteers and writing down the “finds.”
The group thanked Jim Hunsburger, of the city Department of Parks & Recreation, for putting the bags in his trash truck.
The first cleanup of 2019 will take place on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the ballfield on Holme Avenue, where Pennypack Creek crosses Holme Avenue between Winchester Avenue and Nazareth Hospital. New volunteers are welcome.
