Reading tutors needed
The AARP Foundation Experience Corps will hold information sessions at 9:30 a.m. at 1500 John F. Kennedy Blvd., third-floor conference (2 Penn Center), on the following dates: Aug. 9, 16, 19 and 30.
The public is invited to learn about volunteer opportunities to tutor and mentor kindergarten through grade three students who need literacy support with reading in Philadelphia.
The program is open to people 50 and older who have a high school diploma or GED.
The benefits include AmeriCorps opportunities, training and monthly stipends.

Night of activities at Holmesburg Library
The Friends of Holmesburg Library will sponsor Family Night in the Garden on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 5:45 p.m.

Israeli Scouts coming to Shaare Shamayim
Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, 9768 Verree Road, invites the public to meet the Israeli Scouts Tzofim Friendship Caravan on Monday, Aug. 12.
At 5 p.m., there will be a pay-as-you-wish pasta and falafel dinner, followed by Israeli music and dancing and crafts.

Artisan market on Aug. 17
The Oxford Circle Christian Community Development Association is hosting its second Artisan Market on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Exchange at Oxford Circle, 6434 Castor Ave.
Vendors participating in the market will be bringing a wide variety of items priced from $5 to $75, including decorative pottery, drawings, bags and jewelry.

American Legion seeks members
In a legislative win for the American Legion, President Trump signed the LEGION (Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National) Service Act.
The bill declares that the United States has been in a state of war since Dec. 7, 1941, recognizing about 1,600 American service members who were killed or wounded in previously undeclared periods of war.
The Act opens the door for approximately 6 million veterans to join the American Legion and avail themselves to the programs and benefits the Legion offers that they had not been previously eligible.
“We are very excited that Congress passed this bill and the president signed it,” said American Legion 5th District Commander Jim Cantz, commander of the Cpl. John Loudenslager Post in Fox Chase. “It is important to recognize all those who answered their nation’s call and in many cases have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Bruce Conklin, commander of the William D. Oxley Post in Holmesburg, noted that the number of eligible veterans to join the Legion has been dwindling, as most Vietnam veterans are now in their 70s and the Global War on Terrorism has been fought by a much smaller number of service members.
“This is a great opportunity to reach out to more of our veterans and get them involved in the Legion. This new law also expands the eligibility pool for the Sons of the American Legion, which is open to men whose father or grandfather served in the armed forces, and the Legion Auxiliary, that is open to spouses of veterans.”

Fall Festival and Corn Roast
St. Andrew’s In the Field, 500 Somerton Ave., will host its annual Fall Festival/ Corn Roast on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. The event will include a flea market, raffle baskets, bake table and craft tables. Kensington High alums set luncheon
The annual Kensington High School alumni luncheon will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 11:30 a.m. at the Radisson Hotel, 2400 Old Lincoln Highway, Trevose.
The luncheon is open to all Kensington High School alumni and their guests.
The honorees will be members of the classes of 1969 and ‘79, which are celebrating their 50th and 40th anniversaries, respectively.
The cost is $30.
