Lawncrest gives thumbs down to 2 proposed triplexes

Lawncrest Community Association last week voted to oppose two proposed variances on multi-family properties.

In both cases, the owners are trying to convert duplexes into triplexes.

Residents voted, 22-17, to oppose conversions at 483 and 485 Van Kirk St. (near Rising Sun Avenue). A Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing is set for Dec. 4.

Residents voted, 18-10, against a conversion at 634 Kerper St. A ZBA hearing will take place on Jan. 8.

In other news from the Nov. 19 meeting:

• U.S. Navy Capt. Preston Gill, commander of the Naval Support Activity facility at 700 Robbins Ave., addressed the crowd.

• Hope 1 Hour Cleaners, at 5906 Rising Sun Ave., was named Business of the Month.

• Mark Mroz, the community relations officer in the 2nd Police District, cautioned Christmas shoppers to put their gifts in the trunk of their car, not on the seat, as they continue their shopping. He also urged residents to lock doors and close curtains, blinds and shades to help avoid Christmas Eve and post-Christmas burglaries.

• A moment of silence was held in memory of local resident Timothy Miller Jr.

• The HellRaisers Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club will hold the fifth annual Roxanne’s Run on Sunday, Dec. 15, at Loudenslager American Legion Post 366, 7976 Oxford Ave. Santa Claus will give gifts to children ages 1-12. RSVP at 215-626-1723.

• The public is invited to celebrate the life of fire Lt. Joyce Craig on Monday, Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m. at Engine 64, at Rising Sun Avenue and Benner Street. That’s the fifth anniversary of her passing.
