Funds available for community groups
The Philadelphia Mills Advisory Council has issued its guidelines for the distribution of the annual community funds received from the Simon Corporation.
The email and postmark deadlines are March 1 to apply for funds.
Grant application forms are available by emailing Jack Irwin at jfi4@verizon.net.
Forms may be sent to the PMAC, P.O, Box 21189, Philadelphia, PA 19154-0389 or emailed to jfi4@verizon.net.
Below are the guidelines:
- All requests for funds should be submitted on the grant application form and signed by an officer or authorized person of the organization.
- All requests must be submitted by organizations located within the FMAC membership boundaries (ZIP code 19154) and must benefit the immediate community.
- An actual amount of money must be requested (no approximate figures), with any additional details and support for the proposed expenditures.
- Requests must be emailed or postmarked by March 1 of the year funds are to be distributed.
- All requests will be reviewed and voted upon by the council, and approved funds will be distributed by June 30.
- The council will have no liability or responsibility subsequent to the distribution of the funds.
- Upon being granted funds, the funded organization and the council will sign an agreement at the time of the check presentation. This agreement will include a release of liability and responsibility on the part of the council and will state how the funds will be used by the recipient organization. Any interest earned on these funds will be returned to the council and any monies not used by March 1 of the year following the receipt of the funds will also be returned to the council. The council will also have the right to ask for a pre- and a post-inspection and/or audit of the funds received. The scheduling for this inspection and/or audit will be coordinated by the council’s vice president. If the amount of the award is large enough, the council may require the creation of a separate account by the organization that has received the award.
- If an organization is not granted funds, it may re-submit a request the following year.
- The names of the organizations receiving funds will be published through a news release.
- No funds will be granted to an individual. ••
History meeting Wednesday night
The Northeast Philadelphia History Network will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. at Pennepack Baptist Meetinghouse, 8732 Krewstown Road.

Learn about Social Security benefits, how they are calculated and when to take benefits on Friday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. at Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave.
The event, presented by the Social Security Administration, is free, and no registration is required. ••

Get help with your resume, job search and interviewing skills with CareerLink at Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave., on Fridays in February.
The dates and times are Feb. 7 and 21 at 10 a.m. and Feb. 14 and 28 at 1 p.m.

North Catholic wrestling inducting 2
The North Catholic Wrestling Alumni will hold its annual Wrestling Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Harmonia Club, 2404 Orthodox St.
The cost is $35, and includes open bar and food. All North Catholic wrestling fans and family are invited.
This year’s inductees will be Joe Surba (class of 1995) and Bob “Butterfly” Dempsey (class of 2002).
Proceeds benefit Catholic League wrestlers, including those at Father Judge and Archbishop Ryan.

Citizenship classes at Tacony Library
The Philadelphia Citizenship Action Network will offer free citizenship classes at Tacony Library, 6742 Torresdale Ave.
An information session is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. The classes begin on Feb. 22.
Participants must bring their Green Card to the information session.
To apply, people must be 18 or older; be able to read, write and speak English; have a clean criminal record; and live in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware or Montgomery counties.

New programs at KleinLife
A new Lifelong Learning series for older adults will begin at KleinLife, located at 10100 Jamison Ave., on Feb. 12. The public is invited to participate.
The programs are being presented in two, six and eight sessions and will be offered at various price levels.

Learn about presidential children
Widener University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will present a five-session noncredit course for older adults entitled, Presidential Children, at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave.
The course, open to members of the public, will begin on Feb. 12 and will continue each Wednesday through March 11.
The class meets at 1:15 p.m. and will be led by lawyer David Hudiak. It will examine the lives of presidential children from the country’s earliest days to the present.
The cost is $30 per person for all five sessions.

St. Hubert holding basket raffle
St. Hubert High School, Torresdale and Cottman avenues, will be hosting Baskets for Bambies on Saturday, April 4, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the cafeteria.
There will be more than 75 baskets and other high-end prizes. It’s an all-ages event, and people need not be present to win.
Admission is free. Soda, water and soft pretzels will be provided. Visitors are welcome to BYOB, food and snacks. DJ Mary Clifford will be playing tunes. ••
Benefit for St. Patrick’s parade
The St. Patrick’s Day Observance Association will be holding a benefit to support the 250th St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The benefit will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road.
Tickets cost $40, or $20 for children 16 or younger. There will be food, domestic draft beer, live Irish bands, baskets of cheer and performances by the Emerald Pipe & Drum and Cummins School of Irish Dance.

Enter bean bag toss/corn hole tournament
The Northeast Catholic Alumni Association will sponsor a Bean Bag Toss/Corn Hole Tournament on Saturday, April 25, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Fireman’s Hall Museum, 2500 Lefevre St., in Bridesburg.
The cost is $50 per player or $35 for non-players. All proceeds benefit the alumni association.
There will be prizes to the top two teams. Admission includes draft beer, wine, soda and hot buffet. The event will include a cash bar, 50/50 and a raffle for a set of Northeast Catholic corn hole boards.

Benefit for cancer patient
A beef-and-beer fundraiser will take place on Saturday, April 25, from 7 to 11 p.m. at St. Anne School hall, Memphis and Tucker streets, for Michael McKee, who is battling a rare form of appendix cancer.
The married father of four Catholic school children is out of work from his job at Philadelphia Gas Works due to his illness.

HS seniors can apply for scholarship
Simon Youth Foundation will help a deserving graduating high school senior living near Philadelphia Mills pursue a college education.
Students may apply through Feb. 19 at syf.org/scholarships.
Scholarship recipients are eligible for a one-time $1,500 scholarship, which may be applied to tuition at an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school. Students who will be graduating high school in 2020 and live in the community surrounding Philadelphia Mills are eligible.
Applicants will be evaluated based on academic promise, financial need, written response, work experience as well as community and extracurricular involvement. Recipients will be notified in May. ••
Ryan lacrosse hosting Quizzo
The Archbishop Ryan lacrosse team will sponsor a Quizzo Night on Friday, Feb. 21, in the south cafeteria, 11201 Academy Road.

Support adoption, get a free Frosty
Individuals are encouraged to buy a Frosty key tag for $2, with the money donated to the Center City-based Adoption Center.
The tags are available through March 1.
Anyone purchasing a tag can use it at Wendy’s throughout 2020 for a free Jr. Frosty with every purchase.
The Center will use the funds to help find families for the hundreds of children in the tri-state area who live in foster care and wait to be adopted.

Senior softball league looking for players
The Philadelphia Senior Softball League is looking for experienced players for their 59-and-over and 68-and-over leagues.
The seasons start mid-April and go till mid-October. There are about 30 games, along with playoffs.
There are no games in July.
Games in the 59-and-over league are Tuesdays and Thursdays. For the 68-and-over league, games are Mondays and Fridays.
All games are played at Crispin Field, Holme and Convent Avenues. Games start at 10:30 a.m.
