Boy Scouts Troop 160 recognized Memorial Day on Monday morning, starting its day at Burholme Memorial for Peace at Jardel Recreation Center.
The ceremony included an American flag-raising, the Pledge of Allegiance, a wreath laying and the playing of Taps. Scout leaders explained that Memorial Day is for remembrance, not celebration.
Next, Troop 160 visited a house on the 7300 block of Whitaker Ave. that was decorated with flags and panels with the names of the 648 Philadelphians killed in the Vietnam War.
The troop also placed a wreath at the World War I monument at Cottman, Oxford and Rising Sun avenues. The monument features the names of the Army, Navy and Marine Corps “Sons of Burholme” who fought in World War I in 1917 and ‘18. ••
