Celebrating Charlotte Duncan’s 101st birthday

Charlotte Duncan waves to her family and friends.

Family, friends and the Ferko String Band on Sunday afternoon celebrated Charlotte Duncan’s 101st birthday at Wesley Enhanced Living Burholme.

Charlotte turned 101 on April 19, but WEL Burholme, 7040 Oxford Ave., was not fully open to visitors at the time. Twenty or so loved ones gathered in the parking lot Sunday along with the string band as the birthday girl greeted them from her second-floor balcony.

Charlotte’s family brought her a cake and sang Happy Birthday, and Ferko played favorites such as Baby Face, I’m Looking Over a 4-Leaf Clover and Oh, Dem Golden Slippers.

Charlotte is a South Philadelphia native who later moved to Olney before settling in the Northeast. She lived independently in Holme Circle until she was 99, and her son Bill said she enjoys living at WEL Burholme. ••
