McMenamin Family ShopRite last week held its annual “Help Bag Hunger” day at its supermarkets at 9910 Frankford Ave. and 11000 Roosevelt Blvd.

Officers Joe Staszak and Sharon Echevarria, of the 7th Police District, and state Rep. Martina White bagged groceries at the Boulevard store. They were joined by Sean McMenamin, president of the two stores.

While September is national Hunger Action Month, ShopRite works with food banks in six states year round as part of its Partners in Caring initiative, donating some $48 million since 1999.

ShopRite raises money through customer donations at the cash register. In addition, at the Sept. 15 event, employees sold orange juice and bagels and tickets for raffle baskets, and customers paid to spin a wheel for prizes.

The local ShopRite stores assist Somerton Interfaith Food Bank and food banks at places such as Philabundance, KleinLife, Holy Redeemer Food Cupboard, Feast of Justice, Bethel Fellowship Franklin Mills, Campbell AME Church and Lifeway Baptist Church. ••
