September is National Skin Care Awareness month, and Dr. Renata Ruiz, of Dermatology Partners, is offering skin care tips to ensure healthier, looking skin.
Ruiz suggests a healthier skincare routine, along with routine do’s. She recommends that you see a dermatologist once a year for a full-body, professional skin exam or more often if you are at a higher risk of skin cancer. The exam will likely be brief (about 10 minutes or so).
Ruiz provides complete dermatological care, including medical, surgical and cosmetic services. Her interests focus on the treatment of multi-ethnic skin and the diversity within the dermatology field. KleinLife to honor deceased

Polish festival this weekend
The 56th Annual Polish American Festival at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, located at 654 Ferry Road in Doylestown, will continue Saturday, Sept. 10, and Sunday, Sept. 11, from noon to 8 p.m. The Polish American Festival features carnival rides, live music and stage shows and ongoing entertainment on the main stage and in the Polish Village highlighting Polish traditions and customs, Polish folk dance groups, along with a variety of Polish and American food and refreshments. Theodore Blohm, performing arts director at Archbishop Ryan, was honored with The Manilow Music Teacher Award. Care for ‘unaccompanied’ kids
Catholic Social Services is recruiting families to welcome “unaccompanied” children into their homes. These children have come to the United States alone and may have experienced significant trauma. CSS is seeking individuals or families willing to provide a supportive and caring home environment for two weeks up to three months while the children attend a daily education program located in the Northeast. White faults Wolf for book delay
Rep. Martina White is calling on Gov. Tom Wolf to expedite the processing of textbook orders from Archdiocese and nonpublic schools as funded in the 2022-23 budget. White learned that many of the Archdiocese and nonpublic schools in Philadelphia and throughout the state have yet to receive their allotment of books, though they submitted their requests weeks ago.
“The Wolf administration has known for months what textbooks our Archdiocesan and non-public schools requested,” White said. “It is absolutely unacceptable that his Department of Education is incapable of providing the timely approvals and delivery of our students’ textbooks before the start of the 2022-23 school year.”
This year’s budget approved $28 million in funding for textbooks and equipment for educational materials for Archdiocese and nonpublic schools. Yet, many of these schools will not receive textbooks for at least several weeks.
“This is either an intentional way to undermine the Catholic school system and school choice in general or the Wolf administration is mismanaging the process that ensures all students across the commonwealth receive their school books timely enough to obtain the education that is best for them,” White said. “It is disheartening that the governor has failed our kids so badly. I urge him to do his job and manage your Department of Education properly by getting the schoolbooks to these entities as requested months ago.” ••
City caves on Tubman statue
The city has caved and decided on a “new direction” for the development of Philadelphia’s permanent Harriet Tubman statue. After outrage by some black artists and City Council members, the city has decided to initiate an open call for artists to commission the statue, which will be located outside City Hall. The city hosted a temporary Tubman statue by white artist Wesley Wofford at City Hall earlier this year, then commissioned Wofford to create a permanent statue. Now, the city said priority for the new statue “will be given to artists who reflect the diversity of Philadelphia. Minority, local and female artists are strongly encouraged to apply.” ••

Register for Crusader Classic
The 19th Annual Father Judge Crusader Classic 5K will take place on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 9 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the Firefighter Lt. Robert Neary Scholarship Fund at Father Judge. Neary, class of 1970, died in 2012 when the roof of a Kensington furniture store collapsed on him as he monitored the scene at a fire at an abandoned warehouse.
The early-bird entry fee is $25. After Sept. 16, the entry fee is $30. The cost is $15 for youths 18 and under. Race-day registration will take place in the Father Judge school yard beginning at 7:30 a.m. Event T-shirts will be provided to all who pre-register (and to race-day registrants while supplies last).
The race will begin at the bandshell in Pennypack Park and continue along the banks of the Pennypack Creek and finish with a lap around the Father Judge track (behind the school). Medals will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each age group.

Run in memory of 9/11 victims
The 17th annual Run for Peace will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 8:45 a.m. at Penn Charter, 3000 W. School House Lane in East Falls. The event is in memory of Northwood native Peter Ortale (Penn Charter class of 1983), who was killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, and Kenny Caldwell (class of ‘89), who also died in the attacks. Ortale grew up on the 4900 block of Castor Ave. and attended St. Martin of Tours, Penn Charter and Duke University, where he graduated in 1987 and was a three-year All-American lacrosse player. At the time of his death, at age 37, he was working for Euro Brokers on the 84th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower in New York. He was among 61 employees and friends of Euro Brokers who died that day.
The cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt. Proceeds benefit scholarship funds in memory of Ortale and Caldwell.

Run to Remember on Saturday
The annual Alisha C. Levin Run to Remember will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Northeast High School, 1601 Cottman Ave. Levin, who grew up on the 1300 block of Wells St. in Castor Gardens, was killed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. She was 33. She was a 1986 graduate of Northeast. She later graduated from Hofstra University. She worked for three years for Fuji Bank in the World Trade Center’s South Tower. On the day of the attacks, terrorists first crashed an airplane into the North Tower. Seventeen minutes later, a plane struck the South Tower. Fuji Bank, which occupied the 79th through 82nd floors, lost 23 employees. Levin was the company’s vice president of human resources. Wedding Crashers’ Ball at Glen Foerd
Glen Foerd, 5001 Grant Ave., will host Wedding Crashers’ Ball on Friday, Oct. 21, 7 p.m.. Everyone who attends will be wedding crashers at this interactive wedding performance and fundraising event. Glen Foerd Executive Director Ross Mitchell created the evening of comedy, love, fiascos, drama, and theater of the absurd. The ball will include a silent auction.
As the evening of Bella and Brandon’s wedding unfolds, chaos will ensue, and the wedding guests will be enlisted to help solve (or add to) the problems that arise in slapstick and physical comedy.
This is a three-hour interactive performance, and attendees are active participants and characters in the performance acting as “wedding guests.” The performance has four parts: Cocktail Reception, Ceremony, Dinner and Dancing/Farewell.
Open bar will be available prior to dinner. A cash bar will be available after dinner. Guests are requested to wear black tie, old wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, business attire or festive/creative costumes. The evening also includes an optional afterparty in Glen Foerd’s Main House Rathskeller. Valet parking is included.

Big boost for tax prep
Campaign for Working Families, a nonprofit organization that helps low- to moderate-income individuals and families with free tax preparation and other benefits, was awarded $50,000 from Intuit Financial Freedom.
The funds were given to assist CWF in continuing its efforts to support free tax preparations for Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey families.
“It is an honor to receive such a generous financial commitment from a partner like Intuit Financial Freedom,” said CWF President and CEO Mary Arthur. “We believe what we do is so important to the community, and Intuit has granted us these additional funds to continue providing free taxpayers assistance and financial literacy services that are timely, supportive and innovative.” ••
