Coach Legion baseball

Corporal John Loudenslager American Legion Post 366 is looking for an experienced baseball coach. The team was coached for three decades by former Phillies catcher Bennie Culp, who produced stars such as Joe Bonikowski, a Father Judge graduate (class of 1959) who went on to pitch for the Minnesota Twins. In the 1980s, standouts included Northeast High’s Jesse Levis, Howie Freiling and Dan O’Rourke, Penn Charter’s Ruben Amaro Jr. and Frankford High’s Bobby Higginson.

Wrestlemania 40 is coming to Philly, but Wrestlemaina 39 will be shown in Northeast Philly. World Wrestling Entertainment will host an official Wrestlemania 39 watch party Sunday at Dave & Buster’s, 1995 Franklin Mills Circle. The party will include a live viewing of Wrestlemania 39 as well as appearances by R-Truth and Sarah Schreiber. Following the recent shooting at Mayfair Pizza, new 15th Police District Capt. Marques Newsome has assigned bicycle officers to patrol the Frankford Avenue business corridor weekdays and weeknights. Donny Smith, executive director of the Mayfair Business Improvement District, thanked Newsome and City Councilman Mike Driscoll.

Banning truck parking

City Councilman Brian O’Neill has introduced legislation to prohibit tractor trailer and tractor trailer cabs from parking in residential driveways. The bill was co-sponsored by Councilmen Mike Driscoll and Anthony Phillips.

“Maintaining the appearance of our Far Northeast neighborhoods has always been one of my top priorities,” O’Neill said. “Hopefully, this legislation will cut down on the number of these vehicles parking in our residential neighborhoods.”

O’Neill’s office is also continuing to work with local police districts and the Parking Authority to crack down on illegal truck parking and to have the vehicles ticketed and towed.

Sports Hall of Fame banquet at FOP

The City All Star Chapter Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 29th awards banquet on Tuesday, April 18, at 5:30 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road.

The class of 2023 consists of former North Catholic soccer coach Jerry Brindisi; former Northeast High football coach Harvey “Brew” Schumer; Frank “Roscoe” Natale, who has coached baseball and been athletic director at Southern and Bok and been football coach at Bok, Bartram and Southern; and former La Salle University and Archbishop Ryan baseball coach Mike Lake.

In addition, the class of 2020 will be recognized. The banquet honoring them was postponed due to COVID.

Those inductees are former La Salle University basketball player Craig Conlin; coach and youth league organizer Lou DeCree; retired longtime women’s college basketball official Dennis DeMayo; Division I football official Joe Griesser; Joe Hand, a leading TV distributor of closed-circuit and pay-per-view boxing; Mike Hawkins, the PIAA District 12 chairman and former football coach and athletic director at Germantown High School; Steve Kane, the longtime former boys basketball coach at University City who led the Jaguars to the 1995 Public League title; Mike Koplove, who pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cleveland Indians; Kathy Lonergan, a Division I women’s basketball referee; Dave Mastropietro, a baseball star at La Salle University; and Dr. Anthony Salem, a former minor league baseball player.

Tickets cost $75 in advance and $80 at the door. Tables of 10 cost $750.

Checks can be made payable to Philadelphia City All Star Chapter, and mailed to PAHOF, P.O. Box 672, Levittown, PA 19055-9998 (include email address and inductee name on check). No paper tickets will be issued. Instead, guests will go to a welcome table at the FOP to get their seat assignments.

Fundraiser for church steeple

Trip to Mackinac Island, Michigan

The Polish American Cultural Center Museum volunteers are sponsoring a 7-day, 6-night trip to Mackinac Island, Michigan from July 9-15. The trip consists of a ferry ride to Mackinac Island, two nights at the Grand Hotel, a horse-drawn carriage ride and visits to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the Henry Ford Museum and the National Shrine of the Cross in the Woods. Run/walk virtually for a good cause

The Kids-N-Hope Foundation announced it will be hosting its annual virtual Rhapsody and Rhythm Walk-A-Thon & 5K. Participants will fundraise and take part in a seven-day event to walk at their own pace to reach their 5K goal. The annual walk-a-thon event takes place from Sunday, April 9, through Saturday, April 15, and aims to raise funds to carry out the foundation’s mission to support children’s health and life services, including music therapy, throughout the Philadelphia region.

Participants can create a team, join a team or fundraise as an individual to meet their personal goal and help the foundation reach its $30,000 goal for the event. Participants are encouraged to share their 5K journey and story on social media and tag the Kids-N-Hope Foundation. All proceeds will benefit the Kids-N-Hope Foundation, which aims to enhance children’s health and life services through pediatric music therapy at local hospitals and nonprofit organizations.

“We are thrilled to celebrate our annual walk-a-thon and encourage our supporters to get up and get moving,” said Bruce K. Location change for Roosevelt Mall flea market

As the Roosevelt Mall prepares for a major makeover, including construction of a supermarket, the flea market that is open every Sunday in the lower parking lot of the mall will relocate to the lot near Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard, by Macy’s. Flea Market management will concentrate on bringing in vendors that sell more used and second-hand merchandise, which is what most customers have been requesting.
