Aria guards rescue beaten woman outside ER

At about 10:30 p.m. on May 31, hospital workers heard a woman screaming on the 4900 block of Frankford Ave., just across the street from the ER doors.

Some employees of Aria-Jefferson Health’s Frankford Campus hospital took their medical mission on the road last week, but they didn’t have to go far to rescue a woman victimized by a brutal beating.

The attack happened mere yards from the hospital’s emergency room entrance.

At about 10:30 p.m. on May 31, the hospital workers heard a woman screaming on the 4900 block of Frankford Ave., just across the street from the ER doors, said Lt. Dennis Rosenbaum of Northeast Detectives. As one of the employees approached the incident, the suspected attacker ran. Initially, witnesses thought it was a man, but nobody seemed to get a close look at the person.

Police don’t believe that the attacker used a weapon. But after the victim was unconscious, the suspect grabbed a trash bag from a nearby curb, emptied its contents onto the sidewalk and tried to stuff the victim into the bag, according to Chief Inspector Scott Small, who responded to the crime scene.

The 29-year-old victim suffered critical injuries to her head. Aria security guards carried her into the hospital. She was later transferred to Aria’s Torresdale Campus, but has not been able to share her story with detectives, Rosenbaum said.

Investigators have recovered video from nearby businesses showing the suspect fleeing the scene. It’s been difficult to determine from the available video if the attacker was a man or a woman. Detectives continue to search for additional video. The motive for the beating is unknown. ••
