AARP to host workshop on car safety

The AARP has developed a 90-minute Smart DriverTEK presentation to unravel the mysteries of vehicle safety features by assisting people in understanding what these new technologies are designed to do, how they work and how to use them.

These features can include smart headlights, reverse monitoring systems, blind spot warning systems, lane departure warning systems, forward collision warning, drowsy driver alerts, assistive parking and adaptive cruise control.

The interactive workshop will take place on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, Red Lion and Knights roads.

Bag sale at local thrift shop through Friday

Temple Menorah Keneseth Chai’s Classroom Thrift Shop, 4301 Tyson Ave., will hold a bag sale through Friday, Feb. 2. Shoppers will be able to fill a bag of clothing for $6. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Open house at GAR museum

The Grand Army of the Republic Museum and Library, 4278 Griscom St. in Frankford, will hold an open house on Sunday, Feb. 4, from noon to 4 p.m.

The event will feature a history presentation, An Apotheosis of Lincoln: A Deification in Honor of His Centennial, at 1:30 p.m.

Learn about career opportunities in military

State Reps. Tom Murt and Madeleine Dean will host an Emergency Responders and Military Opportunities Day to give high school and college students, as well as those seeking new employment options, the chance to learn more about careers in the military or as a first responder.

The event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Settlement Music School, 318 Davisville Road in Willow Grove.

All branches of the military and local emergency responders will be represented, including the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, ROTC, Civil Air Patrol, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Upper Moreland and Abington police departments, the Upper Moreland Second Alarmers and Valley Forge Military Academy and College.

Information tables will be open from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed by presentations from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a question-and-answer session from 1 to 2 p.m.

Teen chat room at NE Regional Library

Shawna’s House Teen Chat Room is a teen mentoring network for boys and girls ages 13 to 18.

There are group discussions and community service projects. Meetings will take place in the meeting room of Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave., from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on the following Saturdays: Feb. 3, March 3, April 7, May 5 and June 2.

Healthy heart event at Nazareth Hospital

Nazareth Hospital will host Dine with the Docs on Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the DiBello Conference Center on the first floor of the Marian Building, 2601 Holme Ave.

The theme of the free event is Nutrition and Fitness for a Healthy Heart.

Participants will learn about heart disease, risk factors and strategies for prevention from clinical cardiologist Dr. Sonela Skenderi.

Free tax return preparation available at KleinLife

Volunteers from RSVP Philadelphia are offering to help people in the area to prepare simple tax returns and other documents free of charge at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave.

People are required to have incomes below $65,000 for a single filing or less than $95,000 for a joint filing. They also must bring their W-2s, 1099s and other investment income and forms.

Rockets performing at Archbishop Ryan party

The Friends of Archbishop Ryan will hold a party, featuring The Rockets, on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the school, 11201 Academy Road.

Tickets cost $35 in advance or $40 at the door and include food and beer. Guests must be 21 or older and are welcome to BYOB.

Grief support group meeting to be held on Feb. 1

Donna Glatz, widow of slain Lawncrest jeweler William Glatz, will hold Heal Your Heart From Loss on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. at the James E. Kinney Senior Center, 165 Township Road in Richboro.

Glatz will share the story of her husband’s murder. William Glatz was shot to death in 2010 during a robbery attempt inside his jewelry store on Rising Sun Avenue.

Obina Onyiah was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Kevin Turner, who had escaped from Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility nine days earlier, died in a shootout with Glatz.
