Friends of Pennypack Park announces upcoming events

Local group to present series of cleanup and recycling events, as well as guided nature walks.

Summer is winding down, but it’s not too late to get involved in activities at the Northeast’s largest public park. The Friends of Pennypack Park will present a series of cleanup and recycling events, as well as guided nature walks in the coming months.

The monthly park cleanup schedule will resume on Aug. 26 and continue through late November. Volunteers gather on the fourth Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. at various locations. On Aug. 26, they will meet at the ballfield on Holme Avenue behind Nazareth Hospital. Future cleanups will be held at the Little City parking lot (near Rhawn Street and Holmehurst Avenue) on Sept. 26, at Frankford and Solly avenues on Oct. 28 and at Ryan Avenue and Sandyford Road on Nov. 25.

The public is welcome to participate. Cleanups usually end at 1 p.m. Volunteers should wear long pants and appropriate hiking shoes. Sunscreen and bug repellent are recommended. FOPP will provide gloves, tools and refreshments. Call 215–934-PARK for scheduling information.

In addition, the park advocacy group hosts monthly recycling collection events at Lincoln High School’s Ryan Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon. Upcoming dates include Aug. 19, Sept. 16, Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 16. The FOPP will accept clothing, paper products, cardboard, aluminum cans, scrap metal, small electronics batteries (no car batteries), mobile phones, magazines and books in readable condition, packing peanuts, bubble wrap and printer cartridges.

FOPP member Roland Williams leads the guided nature walks, which occur on the third Sunday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. at various locations.

Upcoming meeting locations are the Pennypack Environmental Center on Aug. 20, Winchester Avenue and Newtown Road on Sept. 17, Benton Avenue and Tustin Street on Oct. 18 and Torresdale Avenue north of Rhawn Street on Nov. 19.

Walks are typically one to two miles and include discussions of natural and historical points of interest.
