Live poultry market coming to Lawncrest

The market will not open until at least the late fall.

The Lawncrest Community Association last week approved a proposed zoning change that would allow a live poultry market to open at 475 Adams Ave. (at Rising Sun Avenue).

Attorney Stephen Murphy said the market will not open until, at least, late fall, as the interior of the building needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Hours will be weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The operators, who are targeting the growing Asian population, said the city Department of Health regularly tests the poultry. After a chicken is purchased, the shop will humanely slit its throat. Any chickens who remain for three days are sold to restaurants in Chinatown.

Some neighbors expressed concern that about smell, blood and feces removal and traffic congestion.

Murphy and the operators said there will be no cooking or food preparation, and that trash will be collected after closing each day.

In a show of hands, only two people opposed the idea.

A Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting is set for May 9.
