Mayfair planning an arts festival in April

The first Mayfair Spring Arts Festival could feature a craft fair, live entertainment and more.

The first Mayfair Spring Arts Festival will take place on Saturday, April 14, along Frankford Avenue from St. Vincent Street to Brighton Street.

Hours will be from noon to 3 p.m., with a kickoff news conference and street closures along that stretch of Frankford Avenue, as long as businesses cooperate.

The rain date is April 21.

A committee met last week at Stein Florist to make the preparations.

Stein Florist owner Patrick Kelly welcomed Mayfair Business Improvement District executive director Marc Collazzo and Ryan Keller, an aide to City Councilman Bobby Henon, to speak to a group of local artists and officials of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program will be at the festival. Keller explained that the program will be designing seven murals throughout the 6th Councilmanic District in upcoming months. The locations include the ShopRite parking lot at Frankford Avenue and Knorr Street; St. Hubert High School; The Healing Way methadone clinic; Hertz car rental and the side of the post office at Cottman and Frankford avenues; the Veterans Multi-Service Center Thrift Store, 7126 Frankford Ave.; and City Reach Christian Church, 6814 Torresdale Ave.

As for the arts festival, the finishing touches are still being debated, but Kelly suggested three wood canvasses for live art demonstrations.

The afternoon could also include art sales, a craft fair, food trucks, live entertainment, local dance studios, ice sculpting, face painting, a staging area for demonstrations, photography sales, tattoo demonstrations and the painting of a junk car.

The committee will meet again on Tuesday.

Organizers hope to make the arts festival an annual event. ••
