Neighbors get update on NewCourtland plans

NewCourtland recently hired an architect to design the age 62-plus, income-limited housing and the activities center.

NewCourtland, which will be redeveloping the former Liddonfield housing project site, last week provided an update for members of the Upper Holmesburg Civic Association.

In the first phase, athletic fields will be designed for Holy Family University. The fields should be completed by next spring and will be accompanied by parking for cars and school buses.

NewCourtland recently hired an architect to design the age 62-plus, income-limited housing and the activities center.

The agency has signed a community benefits agreement, and will give local residents first crack at the affordable apartments.

In all, 300 units are planned, 75 built at a time in a three-story structure. Round-the-clock security will be provided.

In other news from the Oct. 19 meeting, city elections commissioner Al Schmidt and aide Aizaz Gill distributed citizens handbooks. Schmidt told the crowd to go to philadelphiavotes.com to apply for absentee ballots. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Oct. 31, for the Nov. 7 election.

Members rejected, by a 41–1 vote, a proposed beauty salon at 9170 Frankford Ave. They unanimously supported a proposed sandwich shop, with outdoor seating, at Torresdale Avenue and Ashburner Street, in a former Unity Frankford store.

Elections for the civic association’s officers will take place at its Nov. 16 meeting, 7 p.m. at St. Dominic’s Marian Hall, 8532 Frankford Ave. ••
