Police nab videotaped crooks

All of those surveillance videos that Philadelphia police have released to the news media recently seem to be working. Last week, the department announced the arrests of six men for various unrelated crimes that had all been captured on video.

In each case, the public helped investigators identify and, perhaps, find the alleged culprits. Five of the crooks committed crimes in the Northeast.

Most recently, officers captured Jason McCarthy, 29, on Feb. 7 and charged him with the Feb. 4 burglary of Pelbano Recreation Center in Rhawnhurst. McCarthy, who is homeless, allegedly broke into the facility through a rear door, then pried open a vending machine to grab the cash inside. McCarthy is charged with burglary and related offenses.

On Jan. 8, police arrested Keith Richardson, 19, of the 3200 block of Tampa St., for the armed robbery of a 7-Eleven at 3301 Tyson Ave. in Mayfair. Richardson was one of two masked gunmen to hold up the store, said police, who have not announced other arrests in the case.

On Jan. 9, police captured Luis Solder, 38, of the 5700 block of Weymouth St., and charged him with 14 counts of robbery, including a New Year’s Day knifepoint hold-up of a 7-Eleven at 5800 Rising Sun Ave. in Crescentville.

In addition, police arrested Philip Delvecchio, 43, of the 1000 block of Afton St., for stealing a purse from an unoccupied and unlocked car on the 800 block of Cottman Ave. last June. They also arrested Edward Barnes, 48, of the 3400 block of Cottman Ave., for breaking into an occupied house on the 3000 block of Guilford St. last May and using the victims’ stolen credit card to make a purchase at a nearby 7-Eleven. ••
