In all, 104 members of Troop 160 have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The troop is also well known for its drum and bugle corps.

Sunday’s event, emceed by longtime Scoutmaster Walt MacBride, featured dinner, tributes to past Scoutmasters, skits, songs, cheers, memorabilia, pictures and videos.

Among those in attendance were Jim Cantz, commander at Loudenslager, who announced that the state American Legion has named Troop 160 Outstanding Scout Troop of the Year and MacBride as Scouter of the Year. They will be honored at the Legion convention in July in Harrisburg.

Others on hand included Bob Cummings, commander of American Legion District 5; Mark Chilutti, board chairman of the Scout Cradle of Liberty Council; and former City Councilman Al Taubenberger.

“A hundred years of helping boys become men is a great achievement. I’m in awe of that record,” said Taubenberger, a longtime Burholme resident who now lives in Fox Chase.

During the year, Troop 160 activities include collecting canned goods for the needy at Thanksgiving; placing American flags and maintaining war monuments at Jardel Playground and 5 Points; laying wreaths at Lawnview Cemetery; and taking part in Memorial Day ceremonies at the Protestant Home, a pop-up Vietnam War memorial on Whitaker Avenue, Jardel and 5 Points.
