Teen charged in slaying of Bustleton cycle owner

A North Philadelphia teen has been arrested and charged with the murder of a Bustleton man who was just days away from graduating college.

Members of the Philadelphia Police Department’s SWAT team and the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force took Jeffrey Little, 19, into custody without incident on Friday, May 20, on the 3100 block of N. 16th St.

Police said they had received an anonymous tip.

Mohan Varughese, 23, had been visiting his girlfriend on the 2200 block of N. Camac St. on May 9 when an armed man approached him and demanded the keys to his motorcycle. The gunman shot Varughese when he refused.

Varughese was taken to Temple University Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 5:42 p.m. The victim, a Father Judge High School graduate, had been slated to receive his bachelor’s degree from Penn State-Abington on May 13.

Little, who will turn 20 in mid-June, was charged with murder and weapons offenses. He is being held in the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on State Road. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 8. ••
