Man stepped in path of train, police say

A man who walked onto railroad tracks in front of an onrushing Amtrak train on Saturday did it intentionally, according to police.

The northbound train struck the 49-year-old near the 4800 block of Grant Ave., a short distance from the Torresdale Station, at 1:50 p.m., said a Philadelphia police spokeswoman, Officer Jillian Russell.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police ruled the case a suicide and have not released the man’s identity.

According to Amtrak spokeswoman Danelle Hunter, train №666 of the Keystone Service Line was traveling from Harrisburg to New York City via Philadelphia and had stopped at 30th Street Station. There were about 159 passengers on board plus a crew. No on-board injuries were reported.

The train stopped near the scene of the collision as passengers were transferred to another train to complete their trip.

Amtrak shut down two of four parallel tracks in the area for several hours while authorities investigated the incident. Passenger service continued on two tracks during the investigation. ••
