NE’s fake ‘Batman’ is behind bars

Six days after skipping out of a Brooklyn courtroom with a slap on the wrist, Northeast Philadelphia’s most infamous Batman impersonator found himself once again behind bars locally.

Warrant officers picked up Charles Nagle on Sept. 13 on a bench warrant resulting from his alleged violation of probation.

Nagle, 38, of Glenfield Street near Patrician Drive in Modena Park, is accused of violating his probation in a 1993 child molestation case by stalking actress Kathryn Erbe of Law and Order: Criminal Intent fame via U.S. mail, Internet and in person over a two-year period ending in March 2010.

A federal judge last fall convicted Nagle of stalking, but on Sept. 7 sentenced him to five years probation and $42,000 in restitution, sparing him a new prison sentence.

With that case concluded, Philadelphia authorities leaped into action. Common Pleas Court Judge Joan A. Brown issued the VOP warrant on the basis of his new conviction as well as the fact that he traveled out of state to see Erbe without reporting the trip to his probation officer.

Specifically, Nagle took his wife and two daughters to New York City, where Erbe was filming her TV show, in 1998. The actress even posed with him for a picture.

But after security guards ushered Nagle away from the set, his tone apparently evolved from that of enthusiastic fan to creepy harasser. He attempted to contact Erbe and her relatives repeatedly and at one point posted a doctored photo of her 14-year-old daughter on a social networking site. The picture had a cockroach drawn on the girl’s face and a dialogue bubble with the words “I’m ugly.”

At the time of his offenses involving Erbe, Nagle was still on probation for his sexual assault of a teenage girl near his home in 1993. He pleaded guilty to numerous charges in that case and in 1996 was sentenced to 18 years probation. Nagle was scheduled for a custody hearing on Sept. 21 and is scheduled for a VOP hearing on Oct. 7. ••
