Helpers needed for weatherization day

New project director Shirley Reses has presided over her first meeting of the Rhawnhurst Naturally Occurring Retirement Community and put out a call for volunteers for the agency’s upcoming sixth annual winterization day.

Reses, who replaced Judy Yellin, explained that volunteers are needed to pitch in on Sunday, Oct. 30.

Clients age 60 and older in the 19111, 19149 and 19152 ZIP codes can request a variety of home repairs and improvements.

Tasks typically include moving furniture, changing light bulbs, removing leaves from lawns, installing smoke detectors, replacing batteries in carbon monoxide detectors, removing window air conditioners, replacing filters in heaters and removing screens and placing glass windows in doors.

To volunteer, call Reses or Alan McHale at 215–320–0351.

The Sept. 21 meeting, which took place at Rhawnhurst Presbyterian Church, also featured pharmacist Jim Reginelli, owner of Nisenholtz Pharmacy, at 7624 Castor Ave. He spoke about vitamins, supplements and related issues.

Other guests included 7th Police District community relations officer Rich Simon and 2nd Police District victims’ assistance officer Stephanie Ahrndt, who were classmates in the Police Academy 17 years ago.

Rhawnhurst NORC, a program of Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and Catholic Health Care Services, helps independent seniors live “longer, safer and healthier,” Reses said.

The agency formed in 2005 and serves people age 60 and older, providing transportation to doctors’ offices and grocery stores and the services of a social worker.

The next Rhawnhurst NORC meeting will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at noon, at Congregations of Ner Zedek synagogue, at 7520 Bustleton Ave. The guest will be Al Taubenberger, a City Council candidate and president of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. ••
