Mayfair playground will reopen

The Mayfair Business Association recently gathered at the Grey Lodge Pub to discuss several upcoming neighborhood happenings.

Members of the Friends of Mayfair Memorial Playground are getting ready to prepare the ground for construction.

Site preparation will take place Oct. 25–26, with construction set for Oct. 27. The playground, at Rowland Avenue and Vista Street on the campus of Abraham Lincoln High School, will open officially on Sunday, Oct. 30 with a Halloween theme.

The playground has been closed since 2008, when the School District of Philadelphia ripped out all of the equipment after a toddler fell when her foot got stuck on worn matting.

The Friends will be teaming with Giant supermarket and the non-profit Kaboom Inc! on the project.

To volunteer, call Joe DeFelice at 215–292–3926.

Business association president Mike “Scoats” Scotese owns the Grey Lodge, at 6235 Frankford Ave., and his establishment will host a candidates’ forum on Friday, Nov. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m.

On Sunday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m., a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony will take place at Frusco’s Steak Shop, at 7220 Frankford Ave.

The business association will install surveillance cameras along Frankford Avenue to catch people who cause property damage. The first four cameras will be placed on the 7300 block, from Gino’s Pizza to Viriva Community Credit Union.

The association discussed the possibility of adding a farmers market on Ryan Avenue and recognizing local Asian markets by conducting a Chinese New Year’s celebration.

The Mayfair Business Association will meet again on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 9:15 a.m., at Firstrust Bank, at 7345 Frankford Ave. ••
