Neighborhood residents, merchants and property owners are invited to attend an upcoming meeting of the Tacony Community Development Corporation, which is planning a long-term revitalization of the Torresdale Avenue commercial corridor.
The meeting will take place on Monday, Oct. 17, at the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Tacony Branch, at 6742 Torresdale Ave. (at Knorr Street).
Guests are asked to report to the basement meeting room. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m., and the program will run from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Tacony CDC is launching the Historic Tacony Revitalization Project.
Peter Naccarato, the CDC’s board president, will discuss the ongoing retail market analysis. The board will hire a full-time employee this fall to manage the commercial district revitalization work.
Heritage Consulting Inc. is serving as a consultant to the CDC. Donna Ann Harris, a principal in the firm, will facilitate a series of small group discussions. Neighbors will be able to identify major issues and concerns about the Torresdale Avenue commercial district.
The CDC will use the so-called Main Street Approach, which is a volunteer-driven, historic preservation-based economic development program. The project will develop organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring teams.
A project fact sheet states, “Torresdale Avenue, like many other commercial corridors in Philadelphia that are using the Main Street Approach, can become the hub and heart of Tacony once again.”
“We are very excited about the launching of our revitalization effort for Torresdale Avenue in historic Tacony,” Naccarato said. “We hope to see many community members at this meeting, and hear their views about the future of the avenue.” ••
