Princeton Avenue now open to traffic in both directions

A seven-block section of Princeton Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia that previously carried eastbound traffic only was converted to a two-way street on Monday.

Westbound traffic is now permitted between State Road and Torresdale Avenue.

The conversion was part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s ongoing reconfiguration of the Cottman Avenue/Princeton Avenue interchange for Interstate 95.

In addition, PennDOT has installed “traffic calming” curb bump-outs and dedicated bicycle lanes on both sides of Princeton Avenue in the same seven-block span.

In the same Tacony neighborhood, PennDOT in August converted Cottman Avenue to a two-way street east of Torresdale Avenue. Previously Cottman Avenue served westbound traffic only.

Further, PennDOT has opened a new on-ramp to southbound Interstate 95 from State Road at Longshore Avenue. Crews have widened State Road to include two southbound lanes, along with one northbound lane, between Cottman Avenue and New State Road to improve traffic flow to the new on-ramp at Longshore Avenue.

These surface street improvements are part of PennDOT’s $31.9 million Cottman/Princeton interchange project that began in May 2009 and is expected to finish late this year.
