Relay for Life is seeking volunteers

The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers and teams for the first-ever Relay for Life of Northeast Philadelphia.

Organizers will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Norcom Community Center, 10980 Norcom Road, to share with residents the importance of Relay for Life in saving lives from cancer.

Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer.

“Relay for Life is a vehicle to raise awareness about the progress against cancer as much as it is a fund-raiser,” said Jen Williams, event chairwoman. “Individuals who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event as a volunteer or participant have made a commitment to fight back against this disease and let the community know that you can beat cancer.”

Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest overnight fund-raising walk in the nation. Relay for Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches and people from all walks of life. Teams raise funds by seeking sponsorships prior to the relay.

Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community support, coordinate logistics, obtain refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment and lend their support in any way.

To RSVP for the informational meeting on Nov. 17, to volunteer on the Relay for Life committee or to serve as a team captain, call Kim Wienches at 888–202–1487, Ext. 65125. For information about the event, visit the Web site at www.cancer.org or call 1–800-ACS-2345. ••
