Philadelphia firefighters put out three fires in the Northeast on Sunday and doused another on Nov. 22.
A woman suffered smoke inhalation and some cuts on an arm but otherwise escaped a fire in a single-family home on the 8100 block of Castor Ave. Sunday morning.
Firefighters were dispatched to the house about 9:30 a.m., said Fire Department Capt. Jeffrey Thompson, and reported heavy smoke in the second-floor rear bedroom. The fire, which began in an electrical appliance, was under control at 9:43 a.m., Thompson said.
Dave Schrader, a spokesman for the Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross, said an adult and three children were provided with meals and money for clothing.
No firefighters were injured at the Castor Avenue house, but earlier Sunday, one did get a minor injury while extinguishing a blaze on the 4600 block of Penn St. Details were not available but the injury wasn’t serious, according to Thompson, who said the occupants, a man and a girl, were treated for smoke inhalation.
The captain said firefighters were dispatched to a first-floor fire in a three-story house at 5:01 a.m. and found smoke on the first floor when they arrived. The fire, whose cause remains under investigation, was under control by 5:21 a.m., he said.
Schrader said representatives of the Red Cross had not met with Penn Street residents as of Monday afternoon.
No one was hurt in a Sunday-night fire on the 400 block of Van Kirk St., Thompson said.
He said firefighters answered a call about a stove fire at 11:11 p.m. and had it under control by 11:23 p.m. The cause of that fire is under investigation.
Six adults were referred to temporary housing at the Red Cross House, 40th Street and Powelton Avenue, Schrader said. They also were provided with some financial assistance, he said
Firefighters quickly extinguished a basement fire in a home on the 5200 Akron St. on Nov. 22.
None of the home’s occupants or firefighters were injured, said Thompson.
A family of four was displaced by the fire and given aid by the Red Cross, said Sara Smith, an agency spokeswoman. The family’s one adult and three children found shelter with friends or relatives, Smith said, adding the Red Cross provided financial assistance for food and clothing as well as counseling.
Thompson said firefighters were dispatched at 9:24 a.m. Nov. 22, and had the fire under control by 9:36 a.m. The fire originated in the home’s electrical meter, the captain said. ••
