Bustleton civic group to weigh proposal for cell tower

Members of the Greater Bustleton Civic League will consider a cellular tower proposal at their meeting next Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m., at Temple Beth Ami on Old Bustleton Avenue.

Verizon wants to put some mobile phone network equipment on an existing tower owned by PECO, said John McKeever, the civic league’s president. The tower is along a freight line that can be seen from the street. The address is 1998 Red Lion Road (rear).

McKeever said Verizon wants the community’s support because it must get a zoning variance to install cellular equipment within 500 feet of residences. McKeever said there are apartment buildings that are less than 500 feet from the tower.

Verizon had been set to go before the city’s Zoning Board of Adjustment on Dec. 20, McKeever said, but the league will ask for a continuance to a date after the group’s Jan. 25 meeting.

The league’s Dec. 14 session will be its last at Temple Beth Ami, 9201 Old Bustleton Ave. Members will begin meeting at the American Heritage Federal Credit Union on Red Lion Road in January. ••
