The recent LA Fitness purchase of 171 Bally Total Fitness clubs took effect last week, with the closing of one local club and a name change for another.
The Bally Total Fitness at 9185 Roosevelt Blvd. closed on Dec. 8, with members directed to continue working out at the new nearby LA Fitness at 2560 Grant Ave.
Meanwhile, the Bally Total Fitness at Franklin Mills mall has changed its name to LA Fitness.
Current Bally members will be able to work out at LA Fitness until their memberships expire. Then, they’d have the option of signing up for an LA Fitness membership.
LA Fitness acquired 10 Bally clubs in Pennsylvania. Besides the one at Franklin Mills, others are located on Aramingo Avenue in Port Richmond, in South Philadelphia, Center City, Willow Grove, Wyncote, King of Prussia, Delaware County and two in western Pennsylvania.
Three former Bally clubs closed in Pennsylvania. In addition to the Roosevelt Boulevard location, the others were in Langhorne and western Pennsylvania.
Irvine, Calif.-based LA Fitness now has about 500 clubs. Its purchase of the Bally clubs was for $153 million.
Chicago-based Bally has about 100 clubs remaining. ••
