Suspects sought in Mayfair bank robberies

Robbers struck at two Mayfair banks in about two hours last Wednesday, according to Philadelphia police and the FBI, who seek the public’s help in identifying the culprits.

The first heist occurred at the PNC Bank at 6855 Frankford Ave. at about 10:07 a.m., when a man entered the bank and presented a threatening demand note to a teller.

He obtained an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the area on foot. He was last seen traveling northbound on Frankford Avenue.

The robber was described as white, in his 20s, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall and with a husky build. He had dark, long and curly hair, a moustache and a beard. He wore a maroon baseball cap, a Phillies warm-up jacket, a blue shirt and black gloves.

A video of the crime has been posted on the Philadelphia Police YouTube channel and at phillypolice.com/news.

At 12:26 p.m. that day, another robbery occurred at Republic Bank, 7300 Frankford Ave., which is less than five blocks north of the earlier heist.

In the latter case, an unknown man entered the branch, presented a threatening demand note to a teller, obtained an undisclosed amount of cash and fled westbound on Ryan Avenue.

The robber was described as white, in his mid- to late 20s and slim. He wore a green jacket, black hooded sweat shirt, blue jeans and black and white sneakers.

Authorities have no evidence that the robberies were connected to each other.

Although no weapons were seen in either case, the robbers are considered armed and dangerous. Civilians should not approach them and should call 911 immediately if they see either man.

Tipsters should call 215–686-TIPS and may remain anonymous. Monetary rewards may be offered for information leading to arrests. ••
